Question about TV exposure if we join Big12

May 24, 2012, 8:24 PM

Who is the current Big12 tv contract with? Is Fox the tier 1? What states currently carry their games? What markets would pick up the package as a result of us and FSU joining? I assume most all FLl and SC tv markets will sign up. How about NC and GA markets?

I see you live in NC. I hope it's an option for all living outside the markets that carry the package.

Big 12 Conference Broadcast Schedule

The Big 12 has a network TV contract with ABC. The conference also contracts with FOX Sports Media Group for pay television. ABC has rights to telecast up to 18 Big 12 games on ABC. This contract expires after the 2015-16 athletic year. Starting with the 2012 season, FSMG has the rights to 40 Big 12 games and can sublicense games to ESPN/ESPN2. F/X, FSN affiliates and FOX College Sports will carry games where the rights are owned by FSMG. FSMG's contract expires after the 2024-25 athletic year.

In order of preference, ABC gets first choice and can select multiple games on a given weekend. FSMG can then select its games. ESPN and FSMG have made deals regarding who can select a game before whom when both have a pay tv selection in the same week.

Individual institutions will retain the rights to at least one game not aired by ABC or FSMG, allowing those institutions to explore other avenues to televising those games.

As part of the FSMG contract, up to three games can move to Thursdays and the network has the ability to place games on the Friday after Thanksgiving and Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

Generally, the order of preference is

ABC
ESPN
FX
FSN
Fox College Sports
Local/Internet

ESPN is Tier 1, Fox is Tier 2.

HOwever, when the new contract finalizes, ESPN and Fox will be sharing the Tier 1. So Tier 1 games will be on both ABC and Big Fox.

All Tier 2 games are shown on the Fox Sports channels and FX (actually saw a number of games on FX last year).

Tier 3 is TV rights that are not picked up by ESPN or Fox. The Big 12 is gauranteed 1 Tier 3 game per yer for teh schools to do with as they will.

Tier 3 money in the Big 12 ranges from a million or so (Baylor) to 15 million (Texas).

For 16 years, Kansas led all schools in the Big 12 Tier 3 money. Until the Longhorn Network. Kansas has seen increased revenue every year and are now making roughly 8 million a year and projected to be close to 9 million next year.

The league average (not counting Texas) is about 4 million dollars per year from Tier 3 rights per school. I exclude Texas because their number skews the average. Kansas and Oklahoma State bring in the most but OU is working out their deal and KSU and ISU have both recently added online HD content for their Tier 3 expected to increase money earned by about 3 million over the next 5 years (KSU made 4.5 last year).

In fairness, schools do not make millions on Tier 3 overnight. Depending on the route the school takes and how they sell off their broadcasting rights, it can take several years or it can happen in maybe 2 years. Deals have to be brokered with affiliates like what Kansas did, or the infrastructure set up for online content like what KSU and ISU have done.

OU's plan is ideal though. They do not have their own personal network. What they have is an existing channel that promises x number of programming hours per week dedicated to OU sports. No strtup costs, no wasted air time, and a good chunk of change. OU should make between 8-10 million in a couple of years.
