Question about the grounding call on Stidham

Sep 10, 2017, 2:44 PM

For you experts at research or rules. Is there not a rule that "inside the pocket" only applies to the the one who takes the initial snap and does not apply once it is lateraled? I know the announcers were talking about how he was outside the tackle box (and he was) and assumed they just missed it. That came up in the deep recesses of my old mind.

You are correct that the grounding only applies to the initial person receiving the snap.

correct

only the initial snap receiver is entitled to throw the ball away. subsequently handlers must make an attempt to complete a pass or it is grounding.

the SEC officials were careful and correct on that call, and also on the illegal motion call when the man in motion was lined up on the line of scrimmage.

the fact that they got those two calls correct, very nuanced and carefully, when both worked against their team, takes away most of my concerns about their pass interference calls or lack thereof.

said differently, i think the crew did a good job, and i am not prone to saying that often.

The easy way to think about it is that the QB is no longer protected by many rules once he gets rid of the ball. Getting the ball back just makes him another offensive player with on special protections. The same rule applies if the ball is given to a back who then attempts a pass. If he throws the ball away, it is a penalty.

Then I guess my old mind ain't as bad as I thought. Thanks for clearing that up. I missed the in booth rules guy correcting the announcers. Without going back and checking, I don't remember Malzahn complaining.
