Question about school colors

Oct 8, 2013, 11:21 AM

Probably a better DT question but one I've always wondered. Seems like there's a large portion of our fanbase that doesn't like the color purple. I'm not getting into the whole "what are we wearing" deal because honestly I don't care as long as it's some combo of our school colors (no gray, black, etc). Just curious as to why so many people dislike purple as one of our school colors, and curious if there's any other fanbase out there that has so many issues with one of their school colors.

Can you tell I'm bored at work today?

Re: Question about school colors

I always thought of the purple as an accent color, used on the trim or as an outline of lettering or something. Clemson has been identified nationwide for the last 30 years as orange and white, and so when you go away from that and go with a purple jersey or purple pants it changes the look and branding we've established over the years. For alot of people I think the orange and purple just doesn't look as good as other color combos.

Oct 8, 2013, 11:48 AM

we are the only school in the NATION who is orange and purple. The orange and navy or orange and white irritates me. I get white because it almost has to be a secondary color on any uniform, mainly because you wear white when you are the away team. What irks me is the stupid "purple is a soft or feminine" color and the even worse navy blue which makes us look like about 10 other D-1 teams and not like Clemson and ONLY Clemson. Personally, i think that we should have more purple trim on the uniforms and definitely a purple stripe on the white pants. I like the Purple jerseys and the purple pants we used to wear. I love the design of our unis but we are not orange and white or orange and navy and why the football team doesn't celebrate that like the baseball team and others do is beyond me. I get tired of the thought process that more purple downplays orange because Clemson will be orange dominant and everyone knows that. We have so many things unique about Clemson, the Rock, the Hill, DV, the Paw, orange and purple is yet another one but for some reason so many Clemson people downplay the purple and we're the only school in the nation with that color combo and that baffles me. I even think throwing purple facemasks on the helmet wouldn't disrupt anything on the classic helmet, for example, which the design and color of which i hope NEVER changes.

All the true empires of ancient history considered purple to be the finest and must prestigious color.

Purple isn't the color of "softness" or "femininity", it is the color of kings.

concerned ourselves with all of these uniform combos until Hatfield and mainly Bowden decided to change all of that stuff.

When you see orange and the paw, you think Clemson. We're a traditional southern football school, so why try to always change things up?

Purple is a great trim/secondary color, but no reason to be all flashy and change up our uniform randomly.

Oct 8, 2013, 11:49 AM

He clearly found that it was a distraction in the past, and he's nipped it in the bud by sticking with the same uniform for Home & Away... Would still love to see all orange for FSU, though.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, but...

Oct 8, 2013, 6:06 PM

I like the idea of once a year wearing Purple jerseys for a home game, and once a year wearing purple pants for an away game.

That way the team wears more purple, but the players don't decide, Dabo does. Also, it doesn't overdo the purple and we don't slip into the weekly uniform "what are we wearing" debate.

Re: Question about school colors

When my dad played Baseball at Clemson back in the late 40's, he said that Clemson used purple as the primary color with most all of the teams, baseball, football, and even basketball and that orange was more the accent.... Not sure exactly when that changed.

I like the purple myself, but not sure if I like all purple.... There could be more of it on the uniforms, but really doesn't matter either way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

my uncle is class of '55 and said the same exact thing

Oct 8, 2013, 11:52 AM

he actually gets irritated with the navy blue particularly. He hated the orange and white changes from the early '70's. He believes to this day that orange is our primary color but there needs to be stronger purple accents on all uniforms and he LOVES the baseball unis. It amuses me when people talk about tradition but they won't listen to a Clemson grad from pre-'70 about things such as this. Clemson tradition didn't start in '77 when Pell got us back on track.

Oct 8, 2013, 12:24 PM

You are correct, sir! Hootie Ingram was the coach (he was not the designer) responsible for the very unique Tiger Paw symbol. Throughout the 30's- 60's, purple was a co-dominant color for Clemson football. But the actual reason we don't wear more purple has less to do with that than with....."I love you, you love me", and a stupid looking dinosaur.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is not purple, it is regalia.

I agree with orange and white being the main uniform colors.

Oct 8, 2013, 12:39 PM

Purple is appropriate as an accent color. Let's be honest, purple and orange both being prominent looks pretty bad (as in purple jerseys and orange pants). Most of our wives and girlfriends will attest to that. And I trust them with stuff like matching colors.

I don't see why having purple as an accent color rather than a dominant color offends some of you.

Re: Question about school colors

Oct 8, 2013, 4:16 PM

Can only answer for myself. I'm an old school guy, started following Tigers in late '50s. I favor the traditional uniforms. LOVE THE Paw on helmets. I can remember CU wearing white at home. Never liked that. I prefer white away and orange at home with white pants. Would love to see orange pants reserved for big home games. Having said all that Just win baby, regardless of the uniform or the venue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I love purple in moderation

Oct 8, 2013, 4:32 PM

I love purple pants white shirts on away games. I was not a fan of the purple out. Purple is a great color when used correctly and I hope we will figure out how.

Re: Question about school colors

Oct 8, 2013, 4:32 PM

If my memory serves me correctly, at one time our colors were Burnt orange and Northwestern purple. Regalia ????????? Never heard that until today.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm guessing that....

Oct 8, 2013, 4:39 PM

Maybe Clemson has trademarked certain colors. I saw on a press release earlier this year our colors were "Clemson Orange and Regalia". I work with several different clothing vendors at my job (Nike, Polo, Adidas, etc.) and all of them have crazy names for colors. For example some green shirts we just got in weren't just "Green" they were "Briar Green". Some red ones weren't "Red" they were "Pimento" I'm guessing Clemson's specific color orange is now "Clemson Orange" and their purple is called "Regalia"

For some reason I could really go for a pimento cheese sammich right now....wonder if Heather's available....

I believe it was Bowden that got us back to purple. as a side note: in Greenville NC they were welcoming a new staff member who was a Clemson alum an they asked a trivia question. what is Clemson's other color. off course my wife was the only one in the Flynn that new the answer. not being a sports person everyone was surprised she new the answer. when she told be I said well actually it's northwest purple.
