P/T? NIL $? Prestige? What's driving so many to transfer?

Dec 5, 2022, 5:59 PM

Wondering if any of you wanted to share your thoughts on why you think so many players are hitting the portal?
Some being starters who get plenty of playing time. Starting QB's who have built solid names for themselves are leaving(Leary, Slovis, Sims, etc.).
So, it doesn't appear to be playing time. Mike Jones Jr. left us as was basically going to be a starter.

Is it NIL money?

Not really; unless it's super private deals in most of these cases. Is it the perception they can better their draft position at another school? How is that when; if you watch the NFL, it's a matter of routine to see players from tiny schools litter NFL rosters. I.E. if you have talent the league will find you.

The pursuit of a National Title or a better education?

I don't think it's any of that in "MOST CASES"! I think it's the "instant gratification culture" we have. Plus, being a recruit again where everybody is courting you and making you feel good about coming to their school. They like being pursued in other words just like when they were coming out of H.S. Because, it's amazing the attention you receive!

You use to only get it once. And then again, if you are able to be a free agent in the NFL. Everybody wanting you and pursuing you. Makes you feel great/wanted.

Seems strange to me; is all that starters who are leaving good teams/schools/systems are leaving!

Thoughts?

Playing time driving the bulk of it imho

Dec 5, 2022, 6:02 PM

You do have your outliers such as the Pitt WR who appeared to be looking to cash in. Then there are those that are starting but not happy with the direction of the program (NC State QB?).

No year to sit out for first transfer - no problem.

But without NIL, I think you would be seeing pretty much just as many transfers in general because of the not sit out rule.

I'm sure there are instances NIL is used to snag a player before they portal, but I'd say it's mostly playing time.

But, you have starters leaving. So, playing time doesn't fit, because they are playing as much as they possibly could where they left from.

For the vast majority, it is simple because they have the mistaken notion that they are All American and future NFL players. NIL only benefits a few players and for the thousands of athletes in the Portal, it is a non factor.

I hadn't thought about that angle.

I am aware of that mindset; can't believe I didn't mention it. But, I think you are right.

Chance to be a superstar and grow their brand.

Thing is; I believe a small school like South Carolina State currently has like 4 or 5 NFL players in the league. Coastal has 3 or 4 as well. So, hard to see the angle of needing to so called upgrade to a big name school for purposes of making the league.

For the starters who are transferring...

Dec 5, 2022, 6:21 PM

....it is 90% NIL.

For others who are solid contributors on their teams it is probably a mixture of playing time and NIL.

For those who seldom see the field, it is a chance to get to play or "I'm outta here. If nobody wants to sign me, I'm done with football."

These guys have been "the man" their entire lives. Now they arent playing and everybody they know from back home, both friends and family, is telling them that they are getting screwed and they need to go somewhere that they'll be appreciated. In the past guys stuck it out and kept trying to improve, now they are happy to transfer to Irrelevant State just to play and prove they they have been mistreated. Of course 90% of them fail miserably in this quest and end up either without a team or stuck in the same situation they left but they really stuck it to the team they left so who cares. That'll show em!

Scholarships are one year deals. So some are just being cut and throwing their name out there.

Go watch the Dion YouTube. He s meeting his new team. He basically says....hit the portal and make room for the new dogs.

Know this happens on a smaller scale at some school s.

But who knows. Think today is a record for 1st portaling so something is going on.

You're not correct on scholarships being 1 year, at least at big time programs that is. Power 5 schools can and do give 4 yr guaranteed scholarships. The rule allowing that changed in 2015 so they all do. It's in the T's & C's when kids sign. Not cancellable for athletic reasons... but can be for violations of university policy not related to athletic performance.

Good stuff!

I seem to recall a rule change. Thanks for a refresher on that particular rule change. Much needed i.m.o.

BTW, Dion was telling them i.m.o "if you aren't with me and what we are about to do, feel free to leave. Much more than he was saying I am revoking your scholarships"!
It's get with the program or leave in other words! Had the video not cut; I would hope he went on and said, "those of you who want to be here and want to get better follow me and let's turn this thing around"!

Yep! Thinking of a kid going from say, Wake to Alabama. Like the GT RB who led Bama in rushing. Or Hendon Hooker who was at VT; who wanted to play in front of 100K. Or Jake Bobo who left Duke to lead UCLA and play in Hollywood. But, mostly the FCS kid at FSU who left tiny A - Albany to star at FSU; so he can be seen on the big stage.

So, yep! Prestige.
