A delusional fan base?

Oct 27, 2014, 5:26 PM

After seeing several links posted on here to posts on other boards from several fan bases the last couple days, I find it interesting that other fan bases call Clemson fans delusional. What exactly is it makes us so delusional? Is it that we expect to contend for championships each year? If that's the case then there isn't a fan base but 1 in the country who isn't delusional, since only one team can win it all.

Do the majority of us expect to win every game? Absolutely, we have great talent on both sides of the ball and play in a conference that affords us the opportunity to contend for championships every season.

Will we win every game? No, that won't always happen, but the product we put on the field each season should be a contender every year. We aren't some perennial 7-5 program anymore that finds a carrot every now and then along the way. The foreseeable future is very bright for our program.

When I am around other Clemson fans, I don't feel that we are overly cocky, or in your face about how great we are. We have a quiet confidence and expect to win given the way the program has been built over the last several years. I don't see us hijacking other message boards pumping Clemson as the next college football dynasty.

I am always proud to be a Tiger because of the class the majority of our fan base displays, win or lose. Sure we have our select few as all do, but they are by far the minority when you look at the fan base as a whole. So maybe I am missing something, but do not consider us to be delusional.

No matter what happens, I am proud to be a Tiger today and everyday!

All teams have some rather delusional fans....

Oct 27, 2014, 5:30 PM

and Clemson is no different while some other school have absolutely cornered the market on grandiose delusions and over-exaggerated optimism so much so that they are widely regarded by many other schools as being some of the most ignorant and deluded in all of sports. I won't mention any names but their initials are T H E U N I V E R S I T Y O F S O U T H C A R O L I N A.

There's nothing delusional about us, which is the funny part

We're always constantly ranked as one of the best places to play football, have top recruiting classes, consistently in the top 25 of the polls, and have some of the best NFL talent playing on Sundays right now.

Nothing is delusional.

and get excited about our starters. When things go wrong, whether it is injuries, behavior issues, etc., the drop off is dramatic. Additionally, oor offensive line hasn't been good in a long time and we ignore that and get pumped up about skill players.

60% overall winning percentage- so no, not quite 7-5 program

Oct 27, 2014, 6:18 PM

The future is bright for Clemson, no doubt. But I think some people forget that this four year stretch is the best period in Clemson football for an entire generation.

Also, like South Carolina fans, Clemson fans see their passion for football being synonymous with national relevance.

Clemson is 19th in winning percentage of all

http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/misc/div_ia_winning_pct.php

Clemson is 26th.

If you're scrambling to look up SC's %, don't bother; it's crappy.

Again, I think Clemson has underachieved for a generation, but the pieces are coming together.

Call me a moron if you want, but until recently, I don't think college football fans considered Clemson a premier program. It's that school with the championship in the 80's and some nice traditions, but not a consistent contender. Am I wrong?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I tried to look up your school's record, to help understand

what makes you so "c0cky"... But I couldn't find a record of ITT Tech fielding a football team in 2008.

That's real classy. I'm sure there are some very intelligent people who went to ITT Tech that make more money than both of us.

Re: A delusional fan base?

Oct 27, 2014, 9:38 PM

I think in a way, all true fans of any team are somewhat delusional. We all let our love of our team cloud our judgment and shape our reality. We let what we "want to be" mold our perception of reality. I think if we were not a bit delusional, we would not be true fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I also think people see us as the turd in the SEC punchbowl.

Oct 27, 2014, 11:58 PM

Clemson is practically the definition of a southern college, it IS a stereotypical southern college: HUGE football program with HUGE emphasis on football, mostly an agriculture, engineering, or pre-business school, in South Carolina, and in the middle of the SEC. To top it off, our big rivals and many of our biggest wins are over SEC opponents. Likewise, Clemson has stayed fairlt consistent with SEC teams, formerly being a SoCon member and although we havent dominated our SEC rivalries, we hold our own very well and have let other southern teams know Clemson is always going to put up a fight.
No other schools around us, except FSU, have maintained Clemson's success. Plus, Clemson is TINY compared to the programs we compete against. Clemson is the small school that somehow made the Xerxes' of college football bleed, Penn States, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Nebraska, Tennessee, etc etc.
Looking at Clemson from student body size, campus size, and the money it brings in (until recent years), and its pretty remarkable to see how much respect is given to a university that is so small compared to its D1 competition.
We are the school that for every single reason SHOULDN'T, but instead we are the school that DOES through hard work, dedication, and determined spirit.
No, Clemson is not a dynasty program, and chances are slim it ever will be. But we are a good program, and one of the top 25 best programs of all of college football, and a top 20 university in itself. Despite how small it is, and the fact that it is located in the middle of very unfriendly territory, it is remarkable how much Clemson has accomplish, and how the school is continuing to build a foundation for a successful future. It makes me proud to be a TIGER!
