It used to all be about Haywood Rd

When Haywood Mall opened , Haywood was pretty much the place where all the nice stores located. Laurens Rd was called the Motor Mile because it was where all the car dealerships were. Laurens was close enough to Haywood that some retailers located there too. Circuit Circuit City, Best Buy, Sam’s Club, Books a Milliom, etc.

Woodruff Rd wasn’t much before the 2000’s. Everything sort of died off past Greenville Mall after you crossed 85, and it went to two lanes after 385 and there was nothing there at all.

The first thing that crushed them was internet shopping which killed places like Circuit City, so you had a ton of empty big boxes. Where Burlington Coat is now used to be a really cool grocery store called Welcome. It was so far ahead of its time it was crazy.

The second thing was the development of Woodruff and the remaining big boxes getting a do-over on modernizing their stores by just building new over there leaving their old locations on Laurens.

Here? It’s a book store.

What’s wrong with that? People never rob book stores, why not? Bars, liquor stores, gas stations,
you get your head blown off stickin' up one of them. Book stores, on the other hand, you catch with their pants down. They’re not expecting to get stabbed, or not as expecting.

I bet in places like this you could cut down on the hero factor.

Correct. Just like banks, these places are insured. The managers don’t give a fuck, they’re just tryin' to get ya out the door before you start pluggin' book readers. Store clerks, forget it, they ain’t takin' a stab for the register. Stockboys, some wetback gettin' paid a dollar fifty a hour gonna really give a fuck you’re stealin' from the owner. Customers are sittin' there with books in their hands, they don’t know what’s goin' on. One minute they’re reading The Far Side, next minute somebody’s stickin' a knife in their appendix.
