The formation of the moon

4,500,000,000 years ago, about 95 million years following the formation of the solar system with the accretion of the protoplanetary disk, the young, molten, volcanic Earth was struck by the planet Theia, roughly the size of Mars. A catastrophic event, a massive explosion, collision of worlds, blew each other into pieces. The strewn about heavy elements of each’s core coalesced again, and with gravity the lighter elements were drawn in until the current Earth and moon had their shape and fate.
