precedent for silent treatment

Oct 8, 2014, 11:54 AM

Okay, so first a caveat: I don't have a strong opinion on this one way or another. Unfortunately, I won't be there in person, so I'm just envious of all those who'll be enjoying the spectacular scene live instead of doing the couch thing courtesy of ESPNU.

That said, the first Clemson game I attended was vs. Notre Dame in 1977. Dan Devine had made some a$$hat comment about Clemson's crowd noise so when Notre Dame came out for warm-ups, the fans stood up and went through the motions of clapping and yelling, but with no sound. I was 15 years old at the time and I thought this was about 60,000 (smaller stadium in those days) of the craziest folks I'd ever surrounded myself with. Then when the Tigers ran down the hill, all h&ll broke loose. It was pretty amazing.

My only request is that come game time, that place is rockin' like a bent Harley.

I'm on a mission to stop this stupid silent treatment idea. I keep seeing references to the ND game to support this dumb idea. I was at that ND game as a student. It was creepy. Why not fire up the players with cheers during warm ups? The crowd noise during the game will make our point.

And I hope you are unsuccessful. I too was a student and it was awesome. Maybe you were just too drunk to notice how well it worked.

There is some confusion about when the silence ends...

I've read to start yelling at the cannon, but there's a stupid graphic going around that says yell when the band comes out. Which is it?

And, is the band in on the gig? I think it is only going to work with the band comes out and pretends to play - that would be awesome. Except, what about national anthem, alma mater? Band needs to play Tiger Rag when team runs down hill.

I'm confused.
