Potential starting OL next year

LT: Tristan Leigh (6'6, 315), 5 star, #14 overall (3rd year) LG: Marcus Tate (6'5, 330), 4 star, #127 overall (3rd year) OC: Will Putnam (6'4, 315), 4 star, #101 overall (5th year) RG: Walker Parks (6'5, 315), 4 star, #50 overall (4th year) RT: Blake Miller (6'6, 315), 4 star, #208 overall (2nd year)
This just has to be the year our offensive line becomes a great unit, right?

At some point our OL has to breakout and I think 2023 will be the year. You could make the argument that 2024 is aligning up to be the best ever given talent and time in the program. I see Sewell being our starting center starting in 2024. Also, we finally have high end functional depth. We will be able to absorb 2-3 injuries if we have to and not lose too much.

Linthicum will be in his 4th year. One would hope that he takes the starting OC job after Putnam leaves.

I think that would be ideal, Linthicum needs to have a strong spring, I hope he steps up. If not, Sewell has a nasty streak and the physicality I don't think we have seen in a center for a long time.

If we don't see major improvement then Austin will look like another bust in Dabo's cycle of hiring former players.

Still thinkvsome blame has to go to strength and conditioning coach. Our guys seem to get pushed around too much. This is not all on one coach.

You are the typical fan on this board right now. You have no idea what you are talking about and are never satisfied with the results.
I bet you loved who he hired during the two NC teams and the 6 straight playoffs huh?
BTW, who was the DC during the Al loss and LSU slaughter. Did you like that hire then?
Sad

What a weird post. Pretty sure the DC that was there for the AL and LSU slaughter won 2 NCs. What have the current DC/OC won so far?

You would think

I was super excited to see what Clemson was like when we made that fun in 2018 -- yeah, the defense gets the most love but that was the best OL I've enjoyed getting to watch since I could remember starting to keep track of Tiger teams (mid-2000s)
I thought the OL recruiting would hit the next level and we'd start to really see Clemson take off (or at least meet that OL standard that 2018 showed more often). And for whatever reason we just haven't gotten back to that level (injuries, development, players retiring, recruiting misses).
Hoping the upcoming year turns out that nasty OL we've been waiting on for some time as that'd easily put us back in the CFP conversation and give the fan base a boost. This year and next should be good years (least on paper).

that Clemson's success offensively will necessitate an improved offensive line anchored by veterans Leigh, Tate, Putnam and Parks. Miller was Clemson's first true freshman to start at tackle since Mitch Hyatt in 2015 and he played like a true freshman a lot of the year.

If Leigh doesn't earn the LT position, my money is on Tate moving there from LG and then LG being a battle between Mayes, Pennington and Sadler.

I think the OL is only going to get better technically with Thomas Austin leading that unit. Last year the OL was alot better with their technique (they still had some mental mistakes) I'm more concerned with the S&C aspect, I don't care how much these guys can deadlift or bench, can they be explosive out of their stance and drive guys back? The biggest issue with the OL is they tend to get pushed around by the bigger DL, they handle the speedy teams better than given credit for.

Just based off recruiting rankings, we should have a top 10 offensive line next year.

I think they will be a great finesse OL. Meaning the pass blocking will be good(Klubnik will hopefully develop a trust with his OL, his only bad freshmen tendency imo was he drifted way too far back, one of the few things DJ did better) the run blocking will be good on read options, horizontal running and getting to second level players, but I see them struggling with straight down hill blocking.

Subtract a year from those experience numbers and you see why we struggled. It's no secret that OL is THE most developmental position in football. Our most experienced player was a LT who was far from prototypical size.
We were never great on the offensive line even when we won national championships. We were good.

That's why I said in an earlier post regarding the portal that talent isn't the issue. Its up to these position coaches to get the max potential out of these guys. The players are there. We had that staff during those title runs.

We actually made progress last season. Instead of looking terrible every week we only looked terrible against the better teams we faced. Hopefully we take the next step in 2023. Would help our young QBs out a ton.

Seemed to me like the OL struggled mostly against the bigger slower DL, which is weird.

Putnam, Parks and Miller in 2nd year starting at position, Tate in 3rd. Far less learning curve than entering last year. LT is the real question, and I agree Tate will be given every chance to win it. He'll be pushed though, which is good.
One thing is for sure is it isn't lacking size. Very probably our highest rated ever in regards to recruiting services
