Portal NIL ad nauseum...

Dec 26, 2021, 5:30 PM

Was reading the SI story on the present Oklahoma QB and how he is, in effect, holding the football team hostage by refusing to say yea or nay on whether he will grace their presence with his Glorious majesty next fall...He is apparently in love with Lincoln as is the current USC QB. LR is a snake, IMO
I have seen no reports on how the NIL money is to be controlled, taxed, and distributed. What about professional gambling getting into the act and setting up corruption, throwing games, etc. Does the IRS, FBI and even the NSA get involved?
Maybe as Scully says "The Truth Is Out There", if it is, please steer me where to find it...TIA.

Blame the NCAA. They set up the transfer portal rules.

A kid can declare for the portal anytime he wants. The only restriction is he has to sign with a school by May 1.

So, kids can go through spring practice, then declare they are in the portal and transfer.

That's the rules the NCAA set. Blame them. They set it up so a kid can, as you put it, hold a school hostage.

Players are self-employed individuals and will be taxed as such. The huge majority of players will not earn enough money to pay any tax unless they have other income.

OP - great question!

I wonder as you said: "what about a player being asked to throw a game"? Before if money was exchanged it was a clear no-no. Now, with the money being "free-flowing"; who is to say a kid isn't offered a stupid sum of money to throw a game? That player most likely will be a key QB/RB/WR or maybe a defensive play-maker! The kid gets paid and there isn't even an investigation because "it's his right to be compensated"! Part of: "part-not all" of the reason pro athletes get compensated so much is so they aren't tempted to throw games to earn more money! Incentives and such that are difficult to reach if you are throwing games are also thrown in. Players try to reach them and most likely don't ever feel the need to throw games for $$$$.
A college kid though who can get 50K thrown his way to not block for a QB/Rb/offense. Or a QB that throws a pick or misses open targets or never throws it to open targets for 100K so X team stacks the deck in their favor for a Win. What of that?
The concern before was that the big schools would get all the best players; but what if it's also getting players on the opposing team deals to "not perform or underperform"? How is that combatted?

I started a thread regarding tampering! To me "tampering" with another schools players needs to be addressed. The number of transfers a kid can have needs to be addressed. As well as time a kid can transfer. Basically; they shouldn't be allowed to hold up rosters and planning! Also, an incentive some booster might be willing to pay in order to trip up a rival or major competition.
When I think of NIL it's only a kid who does advertising! If a company isn't using the kid in advertisements "is it a real NIL deal"?
Just paying the kid and they do nothing is "something else" isn't it?

Thank God for 1981, 2016 and 2018

Dec 26, 2021, 8:02 PM

As a kid in 81 and then as a man in the more recent Championships; "it's been great seeing Clemson football on the very top of college football multiple times"!

Thank God we won it when we did! I still hate Mike Williams was hurt in 2015 or I think we win two in a row! But, we may end up as the last small college to ever lift the trophy!

The last non-bought and paid-for champions "EVER" in college football will most likely be the 2018 Clemson Tigers!

SMH at what it's becoming!

Group of 5 ( and I know Cincinnati made the playoffs, but barely even being perfect and having a road top 10 win) needs their own championship! Cincinnati will be the 1st and last group of 5 teams to make the playoffs the way it looks today!
Between the portal and the NIL thing - it's going to be a "resource battle"! Who has the most resources and ability to field the best team!
Who will help their kids become better professionals later in life in terms of education seems to have been taken off the table. The money is so large in major college football it was probably inevitable.
Parents are pimping out their sons to the highest bidder now; instead of caring what coach/school is best for their kid!
Sad commentary!
Thank God we won it when we did! If nothing changes; it will be tough to get back there!

Just to clarify, you can transfer once without penalty.

Still doesn't address the probable corruption. Sure it's been around since the beginning but not like this. This NIL uncotollable in it's current state and the amount of dollars invites corruption by its very nature.

That said, as I stated a month ago after Dabo's rant, it will get a solution. Too many good coaches aren't going to sit by and watch a dozen teams dominate. The NCAA must address it or cease to exist.

Agreed 100%

Think about this; you could almost pay a kid "not to play"!
Everyone is thinking the big alumni/resources schools will get all the best players - which might be accurate as well. But, to me, the bigger thing is giving a kid let's say 100K to walk away from let's say: "Clemson"!
The kid may never play another down of football anywhere, but he won't be adding depth to Clemson's roster or learning to become a potential future 1st round pick. Desperate people who have never seen that much money at one time; might be tempted to go for the money. If nothing else; tempted to leave Clemson or some other school because the school that's financing the "transfer" doesn't want to face them on the field.
How much did Mike Jones Jr play at LSU? Frank Ladson - was given every opportunity to be a stud at Clemson - yet "he walks"? I understood the two DT's last year(Williams and Pinckney) transferring out due to more talented younger players behind them - but starters transferring out "makes you scratch your head a bit"!
The few schools that will benefit will say: "nothing to see here and hey stop whining and work harder and etc.". But, this isn't how it was drawn up in the beginning, thus it has become something else when the school with the most NIL money can use the portal to influence their Championship hopes!

They won't care a bit - and I am okay with that - but any schools beginning with LSU in 2019 who basically outright buy a championship won't get recognized "in my mind anyway" as the National Champion!
Just start a minor league and get it over with and leave college football to those student-athletes who want to leverage their ability to play football to get a college education.
I don't know a ton about baseball - but I know players can get drafted straight out of H.S. Then given an opportunity to develop under that team that drafted their name for the hope they will become a great MLB player! Not sure; but can you have an MLB deal and still play college baseball? You can have an MLB and play football; I know.
Let CFB go back to the best unit of non-pro players! Those kids who don't want an education can roll the dice in some other league. But, currently, this is a mockery of amateur athletics!
