Play calling last few years

Sep 21, 2014, 12:44 AM

It appears to me that one of the big reasons why we haven't taken the next step forward is partly due to the offensive play calling. Don't get me wrong the defence has had poor games, and the team has made many poor mistakes but for me it still boils down to the offensive play calls. Against the big teams and the high pressure games everything seems to change.

First, the 'hot hand' never really gets fed.
- Look at the game today with the drive that resulted in the botched snap. Adam Choice had probably 80% of the yards on that drive. Play-action pass to him out of the backfield, and FSU couldn't stop it. After that drive did Adam Choice even go back in? If he did we didn't utilize him out of the backfield.
- Look at the South Carolina game last year. Rodrick McDowell was tearing apart SC's defense, yet he only had 14? or so carries. As soon as we got down a little we completely stopped running him.

Second, when we have any sort of lead the play calling gets way to conservative
- Look when we where up 17-10 and ran 3 draws (i think it was) up the middle in a row.
- It seems like whenever we have the lead we completely abandon whats working and the conservative game planning comes out. Why not stick with what was working?

Third, some of the play calls leave me wondering confused.
- The goal line plays and the last play all in shotgun. If we go in shotgun, why not fake the jet sweep and run the QB up the middle. Those use to be guaranteed 1 yard pickups. Every single one of the plays we had out of shotgun took way to long to develop.
- All those 'cute' plays. Sammy Watkins throwing a pass against SC last year comes to mind.

Chad Morris has completely revamped our offense for the better and has given Clemson some great success since Dabo hired him. I just feel he needs to grow a bit as a play caller and we can finally take the next step.

Agree 100%.

On 4th and short, you NEVER take a snap in the shotgun formation - you are instantly 3 to 4 yards further back. A quick snap and quarterback keeper up the middle OR Kurt Fleming up the middle and you score.

Our boys outplayed the number one team in the nation tonight. FSU did not win the game, we lost the game. Big difference.

The future is bright at Clemson, and I look forward to the rest of the season. I want our player to keep their heads up and know that they showed the nation that Clemson is for real.

Just a quick aside: ABC network should be ashamed of themselves for showing JW so much. Totally enabled him to continue to behave as he pleases. He should not have been allowed to be on the sidelines AT ALL...

Jon: I agree with your assessment but Chad is very stubborn and his offensive scheme is far too gimmickie. There is no excuse for not having a short yardage goal line set. none. In close games his brains turn to mush and he can't seem to out coach the opposing DC. That's a fact and just review some of our big losses and it sticks out loud and clear. If I were HC, he'd be paid off and gone asap.
