Placekick Holding

Maybe time to move on to a new PK holder, this is the missed kick from this weekend, ball is at nearly a 15° angle instead of straight up and down. I’ve heard from former PKs that the older Swinney’s played PKH “like a wide receiver” in that instead of waiting for the ball they go to meet it in front of them which alters their position and thus the ultimate ball positioning. Maybe this is why Gunn has been struggling, consistency is key for kicking mechanics

interesting point, i would agree they should look into it.

I didn't really like the guy being brought in from charleston, i realize he was formerly on the team, but not this years team. also the alleged "we wont recruit over you by bringing in portal players this is a developmental program" card all kind of goes out the window with that move doesn't it?

you couldn't or shouldn't talk out of both sides of your mouth, i realize robert gunn has not done well to start the year, but then again alot of players didn't do well to start the season. we keep hearing he has the talent to make a 70 yarder and i believe it based off his kick offs, he is only 18, i would have been fine for clemson to just do a go for it on 4th down policy for FSU in plus territory, but what is the real point of bringing in a guy with a max range of 40, that misses his one big kick.

Dabo said this is gonna be unbelievable or awful, well it went awful so what are you gonna do about it now, you went over the top of the head of a guy who can be here and be very good kicker for 4 years for a guy who blew the fsu game by missing a 29 yard field goal and already has a financial job in nyc......how much do you think his head is really into the team.

bottom line i like dabo he is a very good coach, but sorry this is exactly like some others have suggested one of his little feel good corny stories he has tried to manufacture and in my opinion has blown up in his face already, maybe the guy will beat notre dame or unc with a kick and we will be proven wrong, but i dont see it happening personally. don't think it was good either that the tv announcers let it slip that it was basically his sons idea, they have tried to since spin it that his son was simply alerting dabo to the info.......but what is the point is the info if he didn't think he would do anything with it, allegedly the guy kicker, is friends with one of dabos sons, just surprised or maybe i shouldnt be surprised he would pull something like that with the "friends and family plan" narrative out there.

I didn’t have a problem with him bringing the kid in to shake things up but i would have never run the kid out there to win the game. Dabo wanted to make his fairytale story come true and it blew up. Game was tied, 1:30 to go, leave the offense out there and put your trust in them. The outcome may have been the exact same but its not sending someone out there with less than a week to mentally get ready.

The other shot in the dark i would have called is spike the ball and let the other kicker try a 60 yarder with 0 seconds. He can kick it that far, typically a shank but give it a shot.

i only had a problem with running the 3rd down play to set

up the field goal. That was a blatant loser call. You deserve to miss a FG if in crunch time you're scared to get a TD. Same with prevent defense. You deserve to lose if you're afraid to be aggressive.

It was a 29 yard FG. He probably made those in the eighth grade

Here’s an actual quote, but it doesn’t okay to this weird anti-Dabo fan/victim mentality that is popular around here: “We'll have to use it, but only to fill a gap. There's nobody on the planet that won't have to use it. Just like this year, we're down one in the offensive line and we need to find a guy, so we're actively looking for an offensive lineman between now and May to get him in here for summer school.”

Did you have one of your friends in mind for kicker? His most important field goal was his first attempt. Which he made! Who cares who suggested what. He’d already been in CU’s program and therefore was not an unknown. Take a breath. Cut some slack. It was a gutsy move.

I wonder what our kicking coach has to say? Oh yeah, we don’t have a kicking coach…

I guess we need to ask the defensive backs coach.

Not a fan of having coaches kid's on the team but in reviewing some online tutorials on the correct technique for a hold the comment was made that most kickers prefer the ball to be tipped slightly toward the holder. My guess is Clay is holding the ball correctly. The kicker is obviously green as grass and the pressure was immense. Maybe a portal kicker if there was a scholarship left to give.

My bad, he is the “director”, but does it really matter? He’s basically the kicking coach. They have all these broad terms like director, coordinator, analyst, developer, for a reason.

Does not matter how holder gets ball down, it just matters he gets it where the kicker wants it and that he times it the same every hold.

The Swinney's have been solid at holder in the past seasons. I don't remember any bad holds or fumbled snaps but I do remember several bad snaps that they managed to catch and get down for the kick. I can't say there is any obvious problem with the missed kicks this year.

Gunn has been striking the ball almost on the equator, which

Sep 27, 2023, 8:15 AM

not only explains why his kicks are low, it explains why they look like Phil Neikro knuckleballs.

As far as ball positioning, etc, he and his holder have had a spring, all of fall camp, and now several GAMES to get it right, and are, to put it bluntly, not even in the BALLPARK of being good.

:(

Every kicker has their own preference...

Sep 27, 2023, 8:48 AM

on the angle of the ball. The more important angle is that of the plant foot and the kicking foot, and not locking the knee on the plant leg. It's all about the swing path and what maximizes the opportunity to hit the sweet spot on the ball.

I have watched the tape of that missed kick at least five times. I just do not see any excuses for missing a thirty yard field goal. The ball was placed in the direct middle of the goal posts. A high school JV kicker could make that kick ten out of ten times. No excuse.

Re: Placekick Holding

Sep 27, 2023, 11:55 AM

A few things that would indicate you are wrong in your assessment that the holder may be the problem.

(Qualifier) I was a holder and/or kicker throughout my football career. I went to multiple camps with college kicking coaches to learn to do each position.

Most soccer style kickers like the ball slightly tilted as opposed to traditional toe kickers who prefer the ball straight up and down.

Consistency of the location of the ball on the ground matters much more than the exact tilt of the ball in terms of throwing off the kicker.

When Gunn missed the first kick of the season, I immediately shifted my focus to snap and hold on the replay. Both were perfect.

I have continued to check snap and hold on many of the made and missed kicks when they show replays.

Clay Swinney has actually recovered well on several snaps that were slightly errant on extra points, but over the span of 4 games the snaps on the field goals have been consistently good.

The Swinney boys at Clemson have lacked for talent, but they have been very predictable in their fundamental approach to whatever they do on the field whether it be catching punts, running routes or holding for FGs.

Clay appears to be in line with his brothers in that area as his body and hand control on his holds have been almost perfectly consistent even when the snap takes him off schedule.

There are 3 parts to every FG and XP and I can say without a doubt at this point in the year that kicker is the problem at Clemson and not the other 2 parts of the process.

Gunn is was so wildly inconsistent with foot placement and leg swing that it's hard to even pinpoint what his easiest fix would be. That's why I think Dabo nailed it when he said Gunn is dealing with something mental that is throwing him off.

On the missed kick at the end of the game the other day, Weitz stopped his body early which caused his leg to swing across his body more than normal which caused the hook. He almost missed his first XP attempt of the game for the opposite reason as his leg drug through the kick and the ball was drifting right. Had that XP been a 30 yard FG, he would have missed that one as well, but to the right.

Glad someone else is looking at kicking mechanics, that’s great insight on Clay & Gunn. Maybe there’s hope for Gunn to get his head right yet. Nolan Hauser has been racking up a lot of press himself recently breaking the HS FG makes record, hopefully he can be an early enrollee and give some competition to Gunn in the spring
