My girlfriend of 5 years and I got married over Christmas break (no she wasn’t pregnant). She and I started dating our senior year in high school. I still had 1 semester to go for a single class that wasn’t offered the prior semester. We both got jobs with Clemson University. She worked as a secretary in the Agriculture Dept and I in the Engineering Services Dept. I went all over campus fixing equipment, tearing out walls, repairing or building whatever was needed. It was a fun job and I made a little money. Those jobs helped us pay for a little roach motel in Central. We had no furniture except a rented bed and couch. But we were happy!!

Kind of amazing when you look back at it right? We started very similarly. Got married with one semester to go and worked our way through it. I know it is a great source of pride for me to remember what we started with and where we have ended up. Especially when I know none of it was given to us. Everything we have, we earned.

And I mean everything! I have made it so easy on my kids, but they still have picked up a lot of ownership in their lives. My boy and girl made straight A's all through school and college, they both work every summer, and neither ever asks for anything. They want to do things on their own. I'm very proud of them both.

Sounds like our kids. They are 33 and 29 now and the only thing they ever ask for is some babysitting help - which is always ok with us.

My wife and I started having kids a little later. Our girl is 30 and a mother of 1 and 1 on the way. Our boy is 22 and a senior at Clemson.
It's been a pleasure watching them grow up.
