and initially replied - I just replied 'wrong number'. The scammer tried to continue the conversation, but I immediately felt something was wrong, blocked the number and reported the text.

John Oliver might not be your favorite guy to listen to, but this is amazing stuff that people are falling for.

I know a guy who invented the original pig-butchering scam

He's shall we say, a local, and by local, I mean local to the greater Green Pond metropolitan area. His scam is literally (almost) a living for him. Here's what he does, and it's a heck of a resume enhancer I'm sure.

He loves hog hunting. But he loves money too. So what he does is he traps wild hogs. Most weigh 100-200lbs, in that range. He then keeps these "wild" hogs in pens, and feeds them corn until they're so huge they're 300-500lbs or more. He has a dozen or more hogs he's fattening up at any given time.

He then sells these pen-grown/corn-fattened hogs to plantations all across SC. They buy the fattened "wild" hogs" from him, release them onto their property, and then soak Yankees at $2,000+ a pop to kill a MONSTER "wild hog" at a hunt on their plantation. Yankee gets a picture with a 400lb wild hog, and the plantation owner makes bank. And my friend gets a cut for fattening the hogs for the plantation managers.

It can be really sad and devastating for the family. I’ve seen 80 YOs lose everything and take out loans to send money. Even when confronted by family that the person isn’t who they say they are and prob a Nigerian guy they still won’t believe it.

It’s a great sub Reddit though if you want to stay up to date on the latest scams so as not to become a victim of one.

the bank CEO was a wild one - took a bank down.

Crypto is such a hot topic and many have no idea how to invest, these scammers make it look so real.

They promise exponential returns which the app is created so scammer can manipulate the numbers. At some point the account says you have made 50 grand but scammer says you must pay the taxes first by depositing 5k or something.

If someone wants to buy crypto just do it on a huge relevant exchange like Coinbase or Binance and only buy coins with a top 10 market cap bc those ones are actually real.
