Streeter and Goodwin deserve…
Jan 2, 2023, 3:47 PM

at least one more year. Dabo is trying to grow them up but they need to make huge jumps. I’m honestly more concerned with Goodwin. I think Streeter has shown he can have a positive impact, and a fresh start with DJ out and our O built around Cade with some good young talent to work with will work wonders.
Goodwin took one of the most talented defenses ever and made it look very pedestrian, though we were spoiled by BV, should still have been at least a top 15 unit with the talent, with BV maybe would’ve been top 2. BV teams brought the fight to you and lived in the backfield which made it easy on db’s, now not so much.

Goodwin I would agree. I just think streeter is Elliot again. Would love to see a major upgrade there.

Streeter looks like he has trouble processing questions from the press, much less calling D1 offense. Visibly vacuous.

They are unqualified for the positions they currently have.
But I agree, they will get at least another year, if not plenty more.

To add to my first comment. They’re both going to be back. CDS isn’t gonna change anything. We will find out a whole lot about Goodwin because the talent on D will be way below what he inherited. Def will take some coaching. Frankly, streeter has more to work with returning. Except receiver but he really didn’t have that this year.

played a part in the conservative blitz packages we saw. If you have an experienced backfield, you can put them on islands and bring extra pressure from line backers and safeties. When you are concerned about getting beat deep, you are more likely to try and help the DB's, leaving fewer players to blitz. I hope we'll see more pressure from blitz packages next year as our DB's continue to develop.

Streeter needs to move to another job within the program and bring a real OC.

A "real" OC will not come to Clemson without the authority to 100% control his own destiny.
That means means power to hire and fire the offensive staff, completely revamp the offense from the ground up, and last but certainly not least, the freedom to call plays on game day largely unmolested.
No way that Dabo will cede that much control at this point.

Heck, he doesn’t even let the OC call plays at this point, does he?

If Streeter calls the plays, Dabo seemingly overrides him a lot based on what we’ve heard.

I’ve asked multiple times who calls the plays and no one knows.

Someone asked Tony Elliott last year and he said that he calls the plays but has input from other coaches. It was an awkward exchange.
I don’t recall anyone asking Streeter or Dabo this year who calls the plays.
All I know is that Dabo is talking on his headset nonstop when we have the ball, so it’s logical to assume that Dabo is either calling the plays himself, heavily involved in deciding which play to run, or both.
This would also explain why Dabo is much quicker to criticize the defense than he is the offense.
I’d like to see Dabo hire a proven coordinator and let him run the show. Don’t mettle and interfere. Let the expert do their job.
I don’t think Dabo is that kind of head coach at this point though.

We should not have wasted a year with multiple D high draft picks with a DC getting on the job training.

Dabo's not changing either OC or DC. We went 11-3. He won't change anything until our record declines more and we take maybe 5 losses in one year. And that's likely coming soon.

I strongly disagree. I think Goodwin has shown signs of growing into a fine DC.
I am not for outing Streeter either, but I think he has more to prove - and I have greater doubts that he will.

Based on what?

This year, we were:
28th in total defense 32nd in defensive TDs 38th in turnovers gained 42nd in 3rd down conversion percentage defense 46th in passing efficiency defense 57th in red zone defense 68th in first downs defense 77th in passing yards allowed
The only positive defensive statistics I could find are that we were 13th in rushing defense and 25th in scoring defense.
The entire body of work for this year’s defense is disappointing, based on the talent we have.
How many future NFL players did we have on our defense this year? We have to be in the top 5 in that category, yet we were nowhere close to having a defense of that caliber in ANY defensive category.
I get it, we all want Wes to succeed, he seems like a nice guy, and Dabo believes in him. But I don’t see anything from this year’s defense to be encouraged by.

Judge
Rather than getting bogged down in a bunch of numbers which may or may not be meaningful, I am going to concentrate on the two that I think matter the most - scoring defense and overall defense.
Dropping into the 20s, after losing the best DC in the country is no shame. And given the number of time missed by your future NFLers, it is even more understandable.
I am not satisfied with our defense, but I think that there are plenty of reasons to think we will get better and better over the next few years with Goodwin.
This is in contrast to our projected growth on offense, which I think needs a couple of things to happen to turn their ship in a positive direction.

I believe that if anyone writes a message and infers that our receivers, for example, are not really good, that could very easily lead players to transfer - saying "if they don't like me, I'll just transfer to where I am liked."

You really think kids read message board and transfer bc of what some fans say about them , if that were truly the case they shouldn’t play at all bc that’s gonna happen… and only gets ten times worse in the nfl

The defense held Tennessee to 14 points for a long time but again the offense just could not finish drives plus the turnovers Clemson had. Our defense needs improvement, but most games have been on them to hold teams off while our offense struggles to be consistent. Hopefully Cade and offense get it worked out by next season.
GO Tigers!

Play calling was questionable in the OB, but of more concern to me is player development, especially O-line. We have 4 returning starters up front next year and that is worrisome because there was no noticeable improvement from first game to last game from any of them.

Really? D1 football top 10 team for 8 years and you really believe that you need to train a coach to be a coordinator? You know absolutely nothing about football.

In my humble opinion, I think another year waiting on Streeter to develop into an OC is a waste.
