Over the air HDTV.

Jul 22, 2013, 10:54 AM

Any of you momos use an antenna for OTA HDTV? Shopping around now and could use some pointers. This one's the frontrunner so far, but some people say just get rabbit ears with UHF loop for $10.

http://www.amazon.com/Amplified-High-Definition-Antenna-Off-Air-Reception/dp/B0007MXZB2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1374503000&sr=1-1&keywords=terk+antenna

And if anyone has Roku pointers feel free to share 'em.

For your time:

Yes, go here

to determine which type of antenna you need.

This one is mine: http://www.amazon.com/Channel-DIGITAL-ADVANTAGE-Outdoor-Antenna/dp/B0018BZJNS/

Have the same one

Works like a champ. In Houston we had 25 or so channels pulled in (some from Austin if you aimed it right).

Here in Indianapolis we get about 15, but all the majors.

We recently went for Uverse as the internet speed was better for the same price as we were spending on cable, and it included TV. But I still use the OTA antenna for the major channels as the HD signal is considerably better for the major networks.

the 2XS or the new '3'

go to the /r/cordcutters sub-r***it for A LOT of info.
czech your location w/ tvfool.com to see what you'd need in terms of distance, etc...

this is something that i've been on the brink of doing for about a year now...

I THINK that HTPCkrzy knows a thing or two about it it too

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree about the Roku, don't think ethernet is that

required, but if you can hardwire, always go hardwire.

I've built HTPCs for myself, two friends, Tiger TC, CUFOR98, and my family. Can build them for pretty cheap now (~$600-700) and they'll last for many many years.

wired & wireless...and I'd also recommend a powerline adaptor to anyone who could use it

Also...most networks are within 30 miles, but we get ABC from ashville...58 miles away.

Got any ideas on antennae/amplifier/whathaveyou?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You check it out at antennaweb?

Jul 22, 2013, 11:10 AM

Are they in the same direction?

Wood want WLOS & above noted 'major networks'...
ABC (WLOS)
NBC (WYFF)
CBS (WSPA)
FOX (WHNS)

don't care about MyN or CW (though it'd be a bonus)...I'd like PBS (and there seems to be a signal @ the A'ville ABC loc), but they've got 2 roku channels now, soooo not a bigie

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm still missing something with this whole HTPC deal.***

jbvarnad and I tried out this model at the lake this weekend

Jul 22, 2013, 11:05 AM

He got 18 channels, and I got 7, but the placement at both places was less than ideal:

Was the picture pretty clear?

Jul 22, 2013, 11:12 AM [ in reply to jbvarnad and I tried out this model at the lake this weekend ]

Some people say it'll never look as good as cable and others have said it looks better.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. Over the air HD is true 1080p, and it is crystal clear.

Jul 22, 2013, 11:21 AM

You're not ever going to get terrestrial ESPN in our lifetime, but major network shows are available without cable or dish. Two cable payments will cover the cost of this thing.

unfortunately, the big ### hill and thick forest in my backyard are between me and the Charlotte towers that I had an interest in seeing.

I did test it by aiming it down to PBS in Rock Hill, and it worked great for that, but couldn't get a dang thing from Charlotte

I bought this.

Jul 22, 2013, 11:10 AM

You can find it cheaper on Ebay - I got one for $45.
Works pretty good.

http://www.amazon.com/Antennas-C2-V-CJM-ClearStream-Outdoor-Antenna/dp/B007RH5GZI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1374505511&sr=1-1&keywords=ClearStream+2V+Long-Range+UHF%2FVHF+Indoor%2FOutdoor+DTV

Also have a Roku - works great with Netflix and several other channels.

yes, regular VHF/UHF/FM antenna on roof

Jul 22, 2013, 11:11 AM

######## inside antenna will not work for me. Anyway, a standard VHF/UHF antenna works with HD signals.

Re: I made an antenna spending less than $25...

Jul 22, 2013, 11:15 AM

It has worked better than any store bought antenna I have. I made it from youtube using this video:

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did the same thing after you recommend it.

Jul 22, 2013, 11:27 AM

Works great!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

when I didn't have cable, we used an HD antenna

Jul 22, 2013, 2:34 PM

I was amazed how clear the picture was.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I got this one if you want it.

Jul 22, 2013, 4:54 PM

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BRXW74/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'll give you deal on it. It's barely used. I wound up not needing it because I got this one to work from inside (finally):

http://www.amazon.com/Mohu-Leaf-Paper-Thin-Indoor-Antenna/dp/B004QK7HI8/ref=pd_sim_e_4

HTPCcrzy built me a nice HTPC that I'm currently using daily with OTA. It works great. I have an issue with my local Fox affiliate where they go into a condition called "Special Temporary Authority", whatever that is, making the channel unavailable. By accident, I found out I could get the station with the antenna wired straight to the TV. It's only unavailable with the HTPC. I don't get it, but I split the antenna coax to the HTPC and to the TV and when this happens and I want to watch Fox, I can just switch to the straight TV input. It just makes recording unreliable.

Now that I've finally figured it out, OTA is working great. Being able to record/download stuff to put on an SD card for the kids to watch on a tablet is GOLD JERRY!
