What is really interesting is that the NC receiver who the QB was trying to throw to had stepped out of bounds on his own before coming back into the field. Since he wasn’t forced out he could not have legally caught that ball any way. Although I am sure the officials would have missed the call. Watch the replay, it’s clear as a bell.

I thought a player could re-establish himself back into the field of play.

You’re probably right that the call would not have been made.

However, as I watched this past, I kept wondering why the intended receiver started with his hands moving up to catch the ball and then instantly pulls his hands back down.

Your observation that he was ineligible explained the whole thing.
