On the running game

18

Oct 8, 2023, 3:42 PM

I watched a lot of football yesterday, and I love seeing backs who can get a crease and just go like Travis did. I watched Louisville last night, and they have a guy who can turn the corner on a defense and leave people behind. Out of the people who run the ball at Clemson, QB Cade Klubnik is the one guy who can do that.

But I don't feel like the offense helps out the backs enough. That student body right they ran yesterday? A thing of beauty. Good grief, just be creative and get it done. And that counter to Shipley which never gains yardage? Throw it out. Just take it out of the playbook. It's either never blocked or he doesn't see the hole. Just scrap it.

Now, back to the lack of speed. Jay Haynes has that kind of speed, and he dealt with an ankle issue. But if he's healthy, I would love to see him get five or six touches a game. Just because that cat can break a big one.

As for Mafah and Ship...Mafah would be 38th nationally in yards per carry at 6.52. Ship is under 5 yards per carry. Unfortunately, Mafah doesn't show up on the NCAA stats page because he doesn't get enough carries (Ship has 91, Mafah 52).

We did see a bit of a shift along the OL yesterday....Harris Sewell played 62 snaps and even though he didn't grade out well, he might be the new starter. LT is still a revolving door.

😂 no drugs just think that guy is a diamond in the rough. Love to see what he has with around 15 carries one game.

Only 11 carries for 74 yards. That 6 plus a carry. Like to see what he could do with 15 carries in one game.

PLAY MAFAH MORE.

Absolutely agree with you. I also want to see more of both backs at the same time on the field.

Syracuse stuffed the run almost every time we had two backs. Marsh did break one for a TD from split backfield against Syracuse. That’s probably why we didn’t use split backfield yesterday.

+1 on Haynes

Oct 8, 2023, 3:56 PM

I've wondered what happened to him -- he'd be a great change of pace back that would be a great safety valve on 3rd down (minus blocking) or as a spell for either Mafah or Ship.

It's good to have the workhorses but we need that quick back that can potentially take the top off if given enough room

I have thought this about Haynes since he first hit the field. Phil and Ship are fairly similar runners. I have to think Haynes can be depended on for 5 or so touches a game for a change of pace and to see if we can break one.

Mahafa and Shipp lack a little speed. We used to always have a back that could get around that corner and cause teams to have to spread out more.

While I'd love to see it, and excellent perspective as usual from @dhood. But you're right, Dabo would say we play our best players.

Yesterday:
Ship -19 carries (1 pass)
Mafah -9 carries (1 pass)
Cade -12 carries

So who would you take snaps from to feed him? That said, 2 back set with mafah and him. Could be exciting and a possible house call.

look, I love Mafah as much as the next guy...

Oct 8, 2023, 4:21 PM

when he started here, he seemed to have trouble seeing the hole. But his emergence not only moved Pace out, but also created the current two-headed monster.

But let's be real: Mafah isn't the Coaches' A-gap guy. That's been Shipley and almost exclusively Shipley. He's just better in that hole than Mafah, noticeably so. Trouble is, we use the A-gap more to keep the defense pinned in than to really create big yardage. It's not that we don't ever get yardage there, but most of our 0-yardage plays were trying to go there. And so it's hardly surprising that Shipley's YPC is less than Mafah's. Go back and watch virtually any game this year and you will see Mafah making yards outside the Guard while Shipley is banging his head inside.

Yesterday, we ran the A-gap almost uniformly in the 1st half it seemed. It wasn't until the 2nd half that we took Ship or Mafah off-tackle at all. And lo and behold, suddenly they're running to space.

I wrote a satirical comment a couple of Saturdays ago, "telling" the Offensive Coaches that they needed to set the tendency by running the A-gap. I finished with "yeah, yeah, call Tony".

That's because, truth is, we set that tendency permanently years ago. We run it now just to make sure the D isn't awake.

I fully expect that yesterday's offense was more about continuing to give Klubnik experience without somehow "waking the D up". Too many big games left to do that against the likes of Wake.

When the time comes, maybe Miami, maybe State, but for sure by Notre Dame, we're gonna cut loose. I feel it in my bones...

The book of Proverbs says, "where there is no vision, the people perish." Football= where there is no vision, the O line looks putrid! Love Ships fire and desire, but I see no vision in his runs!

Yes. As long as he picks up the system he's a dude that needs to play early and often. Game changer.

Re: On the running game

Oct 8, 2023, 5:43 PM

We have offensive lineman, who simply don’t contribute anything on some plays. They don’t even get in the way of somebody. Sometimes they don’t even touch anyone. With that mentality, they might as well sit on the bench. They simply don’t play at full speed and they don’t hit anyone. They don’t play to the end of the play and they watch the ball carrier Get tackled. This is been going on for years and is unforgivable. it’s a total fail.

Having said that, Shipley is more prone to put his head down and run into his own blockers back now and when he first got here. He doesn’t have good vision. Mafah is improving in that area and has developed patience to find a hole. I would like to see some other backs play and give a different wrinkle. They seemed to do very well last time they were given a chance vs Charleston Southern.

We need a TE other than JB.

David, I would like to see more motion and eye candy that we used under Chad Morris very effectively. Can do a lot of things with that motion coming across. I don’t see any improvement on this air raid scheme over the Clemson offense run under our former OCs.

I think it's long past time we get a quality O line and just run the ball downhill using power.
Works well for Kirby at UGA. A Pro set works in the pros for a reason. Seems to be working well in college for Kirby.

I love our change at OC but must agree. Would love to have seen a pro scheme with more of a bully mentality. Still love my Tigers and happy we made a change in scheme!
