OL recruiting

We all grieve a Clemson loss differently right, so today I dug into our OL recruiting over the past 3 years compared to Bama, Georgia (recruiting natl champs I know), and OHST Here’s what I found.
BAMA 2019 OL #1 OT, 5* #7 OT, 4* #10 OT, 4* #11 OG, 4* #19 OG, 4* OT Transfer, 4*
2020 OL #25 OT, 4* #31 OT, 3* #10 OC, 3*
2021 OL #1 OT, 5* #2 OT, 5* #2 IOL, 4* #13 IOL, 4* #19 IOL, 4*
GEORGIA 2019 OL #1 OC, 5* #19 OT, 4*
2020 #2 OT, 5* #3 OT, 4* #1 OC , 4* #13 OT, 4* #41 OT, 3* #70 OT, 3*
2021 #3 OT, 5* #9 OT, 4* #6 IOL, 4* #26 IOL , 3*
OHIO ST 2019 #2 OC, 5* #7 OG, 4* #23 OT, 4* #86 OT, 3* 4 * OG TRANSFER
2020 #1 OT, 5* #2 OC, 4* #35 OT, 3* #28 OG, 3* #55 OG, 3*
2021 #1 IOL, 5* #7 IOL, 4* #22 IOL, 4*
CLEMSON 2019 #5 OG, 4* (W Putnam ) #28 OG, 3* (H Rayburn) #78 OT, 3* (K Boat.) #195 OG 2* (M Trotter )
2020 #5 OT , 4* (W parks ) #3 OG, 4* (P. Tchio) #6 OG, 4* (M Mayes) #13 OG, 4* ( B Tucker ) #29 OT 3* (J Williams ) #73 OG 3* (T Howard )
2021 #4 OT, 5* ( T Leigh) #8 IOL , 4* (M Tate) #16 IOL , 4* ( D Pennington) #18 IOL , 4* ( R Lint.)
19-21 OL Classes BAMA 5*: 3 4*: 9 3*: 2
GEOGIA 5*: 3 4*: 6 3*: 3
OHIO ST 5*: 3 4*: 6 3*: 4
CLEMSON 5*: 1 4*: 8 3*: 4 2*: 1
(Hopefully all my math is right )
Some observations/ opinions : Honestly I hate when it seems like we play a bit timid with the run…I feel like we went into the UGA game expecting us not being able to run because of UGAs DL, and put a lot on DJUs shoulders…instead I would love for us to be at a place where when we see some big nasty DL, we say, “Well we got some big nasty OL, let’s go to war and run the ball”
But of course, that starts with recruiting. And not to take away anything from our current tigers, working hard on the OL and giving their all, but you can see there’s been some of a gap between our OL recruiting and some teams we have struggled with. I know that this past summer was the first time we heard Dabo address in an interview that we have struggled to recruit top tier OL (which I’m not sure why ?) and it seems like there’s some bright spots with the 2020/2021 class we hauled in. But to me it looks like we gotta step OL recruiting up to continue to be elite.

We may not recruit the OL position at a Bama level, but its' not like we're devoid of talent. Robbie Caldwell is the primary issue, not the talent level.

That is the feeling around the program.

Do you think Thomas Austin is being groomed as his replacement?
I just hope Dabo really goes all in on fixing OL and doesn't hire yet another former Clemson player with little coaching experience.

Yes I do, and I am in favor of this hire. I liked the Grisham hire and I would like this one, I was not a big fan of the Hall hire.

Thaks CP.
I wish Dabo had the cajones to tell Caldwell he's past his due date and that he needs to get gone NOW. Another season of beating up on diminished ACC talent only to (likely) get pushed around by a top 5 Defense in the playoffs doesn't exactly make me want to re-up on my 8 tickets next year.

CP since you’re on here, Do you know why we seem to struggle hauling in 5* OL? To my knowledge Leigh and Carmen have been the only ones in the last 5-6 years (Hyatt before that I know)
Also I agree with how everyone feels about RC

I understand the frustration, and I will say I think sometimes Caldwell has a hard time relating with recruits. I will say that recruiting has drastically improved there. The interior of the OL was the issue against UGA, and I think that Clemson has recruited to fix that. I would be in favor of letting Tchio, Tate, and Mayes play the majority of the guards spots now. Those guys have a much higher ceiling than some that are playing. Like I said I think recruiting has picked up there Parks is great, Leigh is great, I like Miller and Saddler from this class, and Clemson will probably get Freeling, Anderson, and Miller next class. I really think you will see an improvement in the OL, and I did not actually think the OL played as bad as some are saying they did Friday. That was the best DL in the country and we never game them a chance to get any rhythm in the running game and DJ did not help with his pocket awareness, or lack thereof.

Thanks Paw. That all makes a lot of sense. I appreciate Dabo’s loyalty and I trust his judgement, but the game keeps evolving and there is a lot to be said for young recruits being able to relate to their coaches in the recruiting phase, which is where it all starts. Thanks again!!!

I really think a lot of it is our overuse of RPO. we never ever fire out and hit anybody even in short yardage. We all suffer from minimal numbers of signees on OL and what appears to be precious little development once they get here.

I agree that we should be making more effort to run the football.
Despite what Dabo says about his priority to run the football, that's not really what I've seen.
I thing he's fallen in love and content with throwing the ball all over the place.
I've heard for a few years now that BC has a strong O-line. All summer long, I've heard how strong nc state's O-line. Are they recruiting better O-line that we are?
I doubt it.
