Yes, great post. A lot of those couch coaches want this type of turnover (coaches and players) to happen in "real time". Doing that mid-season is incredibly disruptive and is often the act of a desperate coach. That ain't Clemson!

Go Tigers.

I think you're going to have to wait a year. I think all of the tough conversations have happened. Also, it's hard to fire someone who's position group has been ravaged by injury the last two years.

The O-line had almost as many injuries as the WR's in Austin's only 2 years. I'm not saying that firing Austin was the wrong move. I'm saying that keeping Grisham is insane. He should have been fired before Austin ever joined the staff.

With the way the portal and NIL is changing things to more of an NFL model and away from the student athlete, amateur model, I just see college football, and all major college sports actually, losing a lot of its appeal. This is my biggest concern because as it becomes a pure pay for play model, coaches who like coaching young guys will start to lose interest and if they have their $, they will hang it up.

Agree 100%. It has lost a lot of the appeal, for me.

I use to never miss a game, or even a play. Now I might schedule a dinner out during the game. 3 years ago changed a lot for me when sports almost cancelled a season over something, that in my opinion, was being blown out of proportion

Or maybe it's my age, at 54 I find other things to do more rewarding and less frustrating. Building my retirement home on 25 acres seems more rewarding.

What 92 meant, Raven, is that the lockdowns and all the restrictions for COVID were unnecessary. From the CDC: the rate of deaths in California were essentially equal to Florida; i.e., all the liberal, righteous lockdowns in CA didn’t matter or make a difference. It only divided and frustrated people and made our kids dumber (keeping schools closed).
COVID was real, but the lockdowns were way overblown and common sense went out the door because a few seeked power over the masses.
That is all…

False. Florida smoked Cali in Covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths per capita. That is the only apples to apples comparison. Not shocking that Cali had higher total numbers than Florida, almost 17 M more people live in Cali than Florida. Enough of that nonsense. On to what big time hire we’ll get for OL coach.

After the restructuring of the world economy and the biggest transfer of wealth/most money created in history in 2020 coupled with the Draconian lockdowns and the BLM protests (one by our football team) after the passing of Saint George Floyd I lost a lot of interest in sports in general that I just don't think I'll ever get back. I used to go to every home game and several away every year. Now I have been to 4 games since attending the natty in NOLA. Will often miss games that are on tv but keep up with score.

I agree but think it is necessary. Education is important but I can't imagine a recruiting visit not mentioning the NFL and referencing players that are being helped to transition to the next level. It is not all about the education anymore. And with coaches like Lincoln Riley bailing on Oklahoma and taking recruits with him to USC, then getting praised for it by ESPN and other media outlets its no wonder players keep options open. In a billion dollar industry where the workers don't get paid and the coaches come and go as they please without repercussion (often to the tune of millions $$ in new contracts) its no wonder the players are looking for compensation.

I'm one of those arm chair coaches who criticized Swinney for, as I called it, "taking part in a mad experiment" and trying to build a legacy from hiring within. I've never been more glad to have been proven wrong. Everything mentioned in this article is encouraging but still nagging me was this year's offensive scheme. Especially a lack of scoring and too many three and outs. I thought the addition of Riley was going to open things up. It didn't. Not saying its his fault. Maybe the talent just isn't what we've been used to? Fact is something is definitely lacking. It's plain to see from the couch or any other angle. But as my grand-dad used to say, that's all water under the bridge. Move on and do better. I'm anticipating my Tigers will do just that.

Dabo is making all the changes that I've been asking for in my writing, YouTubing, and tweeting. Hard to complain about contract language of assistant coaches right now. I grant you it is a 2 years late compared to folks who thought it was a bad move at the time, but can we really complain. Coach Swinney looks an awful lot like a coach who is going to take Clemson back to competing for National Championships again.

Dabo is validating he agrees with the positions of many so-called 1.5%'s. He is also validating he places success and winning (still with his own seasoning and flavor) ahead of sustaining hired friends who he has determined through trial & error cannot win at the highest levels.

Coach will still do the job his way, but he will adapt to win.

The only reason that it is silly is because I don't want him to second guess a staff change because of his financial responsibility. For anyone who is a business owner like myself, the consequences of a bad decision is taken out of our paychecks.

For that matter, bad judgement is taken out of our employees' checks and will be out of Dabo's. It just doesn't come out directly. Bonuses and raises are missed. At times jobs are even lost. No Dabo will not have to pay any buy outs, but it will come out of his salary in the long run.

What was lacking in offense this year was a running QB something that’s essential in GR’s “ “Dirt Raid” system. Last year he had Max Duggan who was a Heisman finalist who ran all over the place. CK was supposedly the top ranked dual threat QB out of high school but we didn’t use him much as such. Maybe for concerns for injury and no competent backup IDK. I’m hoping he will put on some weight and be running it more. We might even see some of that in the bowl game. Spring game will be interesting as well

Firing Streeter, hiring Riley and firing the offensive coach He has so far and may be more to come, is extremely encouraging. All moves above are necessary if Clemson wants to be back in the national title picture again at some point

to allow players to transfer without sitting out a year:

2021: 10-3
2022: 11-3
2023: 8-4

Each of those years we have finished outside the top 10, despite being predicted to be a top 10 team before the season started.

This is despite having multiple top 10 recruiting classes.

In contrast, in the years prior, we were:

2020: 10-2
2019: 14-1
2018: 15-0

We were in the playoffs each of those years, and finished in the top 3 nationally.

He clearly hasn’t adapted because our program is worse than it was.

Dabo had plenty of opportunities to adapt, and he responded by making mostly horrible hires, criticizing NIL, and speaking out against the transfer portal.

I admire your defense of Dabo, but the facts are not in your favor on this one. Let’s just all be thankful that he seems to be recognizing the huge mistakes he’s made and is working to correct them.

If he's "showing signs" of change like I said then it COULD be a positive thing, but time will tell. Canning the terrible Streeter hire who never should've been promoted to OC was a GREAT FIRST STEP........hiring RILEY was an EXCELLENT 2nd step...........firing Austin was a perfect 3rd step............ More steps to go for Dabo, hopefully it happens. Clemson's "issues" the last 3-4 years were never because of ONE THING, it was/is a multitude of issues and while progress "SEEMS" to be happening (albeit later than it should've).......I still need to see him follow through with it, speaking from a PORTAL perspective.

I've said MANY times recently. Clemson radio/media/etc... seems to be really confident that Dabo will get some IMPACT players from the portal..............hopefully they're correct, because as of now he HASN'T. Offers mean nothing until you land them..........gotta see it through.

What has he done differently this season that he has not done before?

You are attributing him doing exactly what he has done in the past as evidence he is "showing signs" of change.

1) "Canning the terrible Streeter hire who never should've been promoted to OC was a GREAT FIRST STEP........" Fact: This is not the first time he's fired an OC he's hired.

2) "hiring RILEY was an EXCELLENT 2nd step..........." Fact: Riley is not the first "excellent step" he's taken by hiring an OC.

3) "firing Austin was a perfect 3rd step............" Fact: Austin is not the first coach he has fired.

It sounds like you are just regurgitating what you heard someone else say on the radio/media without actually thinking about what you are arguing. It's almost like you want recognition/credit for something Dabo is doing. As if Dabo had an awakening this season, thanks to you complaining on a message board, and is finally seeing what you have seen all along. When the fact of the matter is he has done absolutely nothing differently so far this season than he has in the past. So, congratulations?

By the way, you are saying Streeter was terrible and Riley is excellent without providing your reason/evidence for this assertion. I'm not saying you are right or wrong, but I'd like you to explain how you drew this conclusion.

1) Fact: This is not the first time he's fired an OC he's hired............first time in 13 years.....much like technology football is a completely different beast than it was 13 years ago. You can't always operate with the same MO that you may have done in the past.

2) Fact: Riley is not the first celebrated OC he's hired...........First time in 13 years......much like technology football is a completely different beast than it was 13 years ago. You can't always operate with the same MO that you may have done in the past.

3)Fact: Austin is not the first coach he has fired..........what's encouraging about this one is he did it back to back years, although neither Streeter nor Austin were qualified for those positions to begin with.

Odd you didn't mention anything about the portal b/c you know there's been no IMPACT portal players brought in by Dabo....offers mean nothing..........clipboard holding QBs aren't impactful.......something he should've started 2-3 years ago. Again, another reason why we're hit a slide the last 3-4 years and ended with the worst regular season record in 13 years. We shouldn't have had to go 8-4 to push him to make the supposed moves he seems to be making.

but like i've said.........it's encouraging to see that MAY be changing and adjusting to the times of college football.

He hasn't done anything differently YET from a portal perspective. I've said that multiple times, you just have an odd urge to argue. The signs that I've seen are the articles/posts/comments from Clemson beat-writers (David Hood as an example) and talking WCCP radio heads that most seem to be "close to the program" that have flat out said Dabo WILL go to the portal and get some impact players that are NOT the 2 player types he went out and got in the past (clipboard holding QBs)..........they've never said that in the past, so the "signs" seem positive, BUT I need to see the follow through from Dabo...........If you can't comprehend that then I can't help ya.

If we do get difference makers from the portal, they will say:

"See! Dabo isn't against the portal, he was just waiting for the right time. Go Dabo!"

If we don't get difference makers from the portal, they will say:

"Dabo tried, but portal players are all about the money, and Clemson is too poor to compete with the big boys when it comes to buying players."

Either way, the rationalization and defense of their hero can continue.

I really don't know why Dabo stays as our coach when writers, talk show nuts and fans discredit and disrespect him every time we don't get what we want. Are the above mentioned people all in kindergarten and sulk and pitch a fit when their friend gets the cookie they want? Nobody seems to remember that there was no need to fire assistant coaches from 2014-2019 because we were building, winning ACC Championships bowl games and National Championships. Our assistants were considered the best there was but guess what, many of those assistants are gone. We started over and changes are just natural, not surprising.

To say it is surprising that Dabo fires assistants just discredits him as a coach that wants to do all he can to put a team on the field that can win every game. The headline is totally inappropriate and just leads unknowing people to believe Dabo does not know what he is doing and does not care about winning. Shame, shame, shame because so many people have lost faith in the best coach we have ever had or ever will have.

A great follow-up article would be to take an honest look at the hiring decisions he has made over the past few years. As we have seen, several of those have been bad decisions on Dabo’s part, resulting in these coaches he felt so strongly about being fired within the next one to two years.

While it’s great that he wants to win, and is willing to make tough decisions to fire people, a better path forward would be to stop hiring inexperienced people to begin with simply because they are nice, or they went to college with Dabo, or they played at Clemson.

After all, putting the right people in place to begin with, is an essential role of a CEO.

This quote from David’s article very correctly describes you as a “couch coach”:

“ I’ve heard from plenty of fans and couch coaches over the last three seasons that Swinney was complacent, was happy with his fat contract, and had lost the fire that propelled Clemson to six consecutive College Football Playoff berths, appearances in four National Championship Games, and the right to hoist to two National Championship trophies.”

Apart from firing coaches and making one portal offer, he hasn't HIRED a coach with proven results or landed a meaningful/impactful transfer player. A bit presumptuous to say, "All is fine - nothing to see here." Who are the replacements?

Fact is, a team with measurably more talent than any other in conference finished in 6th place. Clearly, something is rotten in Denmark. What's transpired in the past few days hasn't changed anything. It's good that steps are being taken to remedy that, but doing so doesn't vindicate the program or nullify the opinions of those who've called for these very remedies. If anything, it proves the couch coaches right.

Mike Norvell turned around the Florida State program almost ovenight, and the portal is a major reason why. He got future NFL receiver Keon Coleman, among others, through the portal—the guy who scored two touchdowns against us in a game we still should have won.

Now FSU is the best team in the ACC, which we were for years. They are 12-0 and headed for the CFP, which is where we were year after year. To paraphrase Casey Stengel, Norvell “seen his opportunities and he took ‘em”. He was not bound by tradition, which still matters a lot at Clemson; and I would bet that Norvell does not care as much about helping his recruits become not just great football players, but responsible young men, too, which is a Dabo trademark.

To his credit, Dabo has spoken openly about the reality for 99% of college football players; i.e., they ain’t going to play one down in the NFL. So helping boys become men who will contribute to society when their college football days are over is a priority for Dabo. His staff shakeup is acknowledgement that his entire approach to the game needs to be upgraded. He has to do that, and to skillfully use the portal and NIL, or coaches like Norvell and programs like the re-invented FSU will ecliipse us forever.

I just hope Dabo retains his very admirable principles. He is not only the best coach Clemson has ever had, he is a very special man. We are lucky to have him.

Those of us who said those things also said that Dabo would eventually have to embrace NIL and the portal and make tough decisions because he would have no choice because the program would start sliding if not. That time has come.

Most of the blather around that this season aligns well with the early Dabo dumper days - loud know-it-alls who felt betrayed that Clemson hired a 'cheerleader' instead of a rough and tumble footballer that they could better identify with.

And when we hit our first patch of legitimate adversity, it's the same type group grousing and getting all psycho babble on Dabo with the criticisms.

In the beginning it was 'so obvious!' Today it's 'so obvious!' Same blather - different decade.

Go Tigers!

So I could put together a way too early depth chart. I was stunned at how many players contribute absolutely nothing on game day. Name after name, that really don't have any business on a team with top 10 goals. I could not believe that these guys were on scholarship. I guess it doesn't matter because if you're with potential contributors at that depth, they'd just transfer out. But still, wow.

I'm sure Bama and Georgia don't have that amount of filler. So that's another area he needs to work on. And an assistant coach who has a kid that played high school qb, does not need to be a qb on this level team just because he played in high school.

The only people who are surprised by Coach Swinney's moves are the ones who lost faith in him as a coach because he did not do exactly what they thought he should have done exactly when they thought he should have done it. Every great leader has the problem of dealing with followers who quit following and start second guessing their leadership. And nearly every crowd or mob of people stumbling down the street has more than a few who doubt the leader and want to pretend they have insight the leader lacks. The Clemson fanbase has 'fans' who are committed second guessers. Luckily most Clemson fans recognize and respect Coach Swinney's leadership and do not quit following every chance they get.

People who have paid attention for 15 years and doubt Coach Swinney's competitiveness are left of the top of the bell curve of intelligence.

Go Tigers!!

I know that many have questioned his desire, but I think more have questioned his judgement, and he is validating those questions. I don't wonder if he will adapt, I wonder if he will keep pace with changing environment of college football.

Changes have been bigger and faster the last several years, so I think in five years the game will look more like today, than today's game looks like it did 5 years ago. Considering Dabo is slow to change, that would be a good thing for us if that is the case.
