it's not how much rain we get, it's how much in a short period.
A one-hour big 0.5" thunderstorm will raise my pond more than a 2-day 2" set rain.
This one should be interesting as it's a huge amount in a pretty small window (about 12 hours I think).

Ground that is more hydrated absorbs water better and more quickly, leading to less runoff and pooling into lakes, which is the exact phenomenon you're experiencing.
