Officiating.

All our kids attend/have attended a certain small (A) school here in GVL.

Lately, we've noticed a marked decline in officiating (basketball). Maybe it's because we're a small school and get the dregs.

One game, their whistles are broken. The next, they're hyper-sensitive.

Meanwhile, the kids have no real idea what a charge is, or a moving screen, or a reach-in, or travel, or personal foul, because every crew calls them differently.

We've taught our squids to NEVER blame the refs, or complain about a bad call. Life is not fair.

But these clowns have gotten so wildly inconsistent, we're all standing on our tongues.

Is there a shortage of good refs? I feel that must be the case given our collective obsession with sports -- too many games, not enough competent officials.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it this bad in AAA, AAAA, AAAAA?

Not only in Greenville, but here in Illinois as well. I had to leave my granddaughters game the other night or I would have been escorted out. I honestly believe they had the 3 most incompetent refs at that game I have ever seen. Tripping, grabbing arms and pushing the girls to the floor. Traveling wasn’t called, as they were taking 4 or more steps and nothing. Guess it is a problem all over the nation.

forgot to tell players, coaches, and families.

I can stomach a crew going light on some things or blowing the whistle on others ... just do it on BOTH ends of the court.

But traveling, slapping, over-the -backs? Those should be called every time.

So you had to remove yourself from your granddaughters 12 year old rec basketball game bc the 20 year old making $20 a game missed a few travel calls and foul calls?

Couple things… if you called every foul and every violation in 12 year old girls basketball the game would never end. It would be like cricket. You’d have to come back the next day to watch the thrilling conclusion.

Now a days every parent thinks their kid is going to get a full ride to a major university to play whatever sport you have decided they are best at. This just isn’t the case. Unless that 12 year old girl is scoring 40 points a game in rec league she will be paying for school.

If you don’t like how the games are being officiated, I suggest picking up a whistle and volunteering to do it yourself.

Anyway.

The point about scholly players and moronic parents is entirely true.

Club baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball ... it's a huge business predicated on a faulty notion.

My wife got offers to play at a host of dinky schools after a lifetime of club soccer. She was miserable playing club soccer but her folks wanted to put her "with the best."

Poppycock. She walked on to Clemson's flippin' tennis team instead.

So in the end, all that money on club, down the tubes.

Her folks now say they'd counsel any parent to avoid the toxic club culture at all costs.

If your kid is gifted, the scouts WILL find them.

Unnecessarily so. Most likely the result of no life experience yourself?

Doesnt really matter, but my point is that the OP clearly makes a valid point and objectively so, being that "most" as you said, parents and or spectators don't care about every call being whistled so much as the whistle going both ways.

The glass is not that empty, my friend.

The disease of incompetence began in the ACC decades ago and has spread across the world.

Side note, would you want to officiate and subject yourself to crazy/hostile/abusive parents/fans all the time?

I agree there.

Some of the parents should have their ears boxed and their mouths cauterized.

We as a group of parents regulate ourselves pretty well -- hold one another accountable to behave and not be jerks.

But there are times when the hotheads lose control.

When every game features a deputy with a sidearm, it speaks to where we are as a culture.

Apparently it starts at the top and trickles down. Ever watched an NBA game and noticed the number of non-calls on fouls, travelling, etc.........? It's ridiculous and out of hand!

Agree that overall it has declined terribly. But…..I did watch a game last week that my 12 year old granddaughter played in. It was in Aiken at a local church between two local Christian schools. The two refs were the best I’ve seen in a long while. Consistent! Called traveling, slaps, over the back, and also charges. Let great blocks and jump balls stand as appropriate. I was thinking where did they find these refs? They should be working the ACC.

I reffed intramural games at Fike in the 80s. You gotta be able to take a lot of crap and keep going. The sorority teams were the worst.

Small high school basketball officials are probably paid VERY little. At least they are out there doing it. Most people, especially those who complain loudest wouldn’t even consider doing it for what they get paid.

Sign of the times.

Most people are just yapping and chirping, anyway. Let em yap and chirp.

But I can see where refs with thinner skin and brittle spines grow quickly tired of the noise. Some of these parents are waaaay out of pocket.

It’s bad. You can not figure out what the rules are by watching the game. I ran into this 19 years ago when my kids started playing soccer. I couldn’t understand the calls I was seeing, so I started reading/studying the Laws of the Game. Then it became crystal clear to me that the reason I couldn’t figure out what the rules were, is because the refs weren’t calling it by the rules. They just made it up. When you reach the college level, you’ll find some refs are just flat out corrupt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Try doing it yourself

Only being slightly sarcastic, if you have ever been an official for anything it isn't easy. I used to umpire softball and referee basketball. My basketball experience was "intramurals" in the army. That is probably the most difficult of all as you will have such a disparity in talent, from high quality college backgrounds to guys that couldn't make their high school roster. What are you going to call and when. Remember the video of Trevor Lawrence playing intramural ball, where the short guy (about my size 5'9") set a back court pick against him. Trevor shoved him for about 4'. Do you kick him out of the game or not?

If you want to do any officiating first thing to do is get the rule book and study it. Then attend some clinics to be sure you understand the rules. Finally if you are doing it for the money listen to Joe Biden "DON'T." At the youth level do it for the kids, at higher levels do it because you love the game and want it to be done right.

I would think

when a ref starts being the arbiter of who to call what on and when, is when things begin to break down.

If TL charged, you call a charge. If it was flagrant, you T him up. Who cares who he is.

If the college player travels, or the guy who can barely dribble reaches in, call it.

So yeah, knowing the rules seems half the battle. Being willing to enforce them no matter the skill level or people involved seems the other.

And at the youth and even middle school levels, if those rulebooks need to be loosened to give the kids a chance to learn how to just play the game, then lets do that.

We cycle the same horrid crews all over Greenville county.

We transferred schools last year and I can tell you that the sizes mean nothing.

We went down to Greenwood last week and I was shocked at what the other team got away with. The week before at home we had a crew that called harsh breath a foul....

We've had one crew all season that

called it the same on both ends of the court.

They allow an overly physical game in the paint and are too easy on moving screens, but theyre consistent about it, and the players/coaches respect them.

AND, they'll warn loudmouthed parents if they think it's getting out of hand. Which is great.

Hopefully we'll have them at some point in the playoffs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That I have no problem with if they are being consistent.

What drives me to drink are the refs that you catch not paying attention, going on crowd reactions to determine calls, not admitting a mistake, letting their egos account for their calls...

On the flip side, I have zero desire to be a high school ref. It's not an easy job, but just like public servants, they signed up for it and should be held accountable.
