Offensive overhaul

3

Jan 9, 2023, 10:52 AM

Ideally, what I would like to see happen is that all spring and into Aug. camp, we put a huge emphasis on being a run-first team. When we had Nuk,Sammy, Mike, Justyn, Amari etc. the emphasis was on throwing the ball and it brought us success.

As has been discussed ad nauseum, there are none of those type WR's on the current roster. Ship and Mafah are our 2 best skill guys and the offense needs to be tailored to them. 3rd and 4 or shorter needs to be a running down. As the season progresses and more defenders crowd the box, we can let CK start throwing more, which we WILL need to play playoff winning football. With a more physical O-Line I would like to see Ship and Mafah both top 1000 yards next year. 40 carries a game minimum between the two of them with Thomas or Adams Jr. adding another 5-7 per game.

One thing I kept asking over and over last year is what IS our offensive identity or do we even have one. Hopefully that changes in the off-season

Sounds good but where are we gonna get this more physical O-line? Our O-line has been mediocre for years and I don't see much change with this roster. Tennessee's defense was no world beater but they made our O-line look pathetic. Ship and Mafah are both really good backs but it's hard to go anywhere with no holes.

The OL did not get out-physicaled by UT. Our two RBs were making yards. Contrary to popular belief they don't do that by themselves.

Pressure in the passing game was also not due to OL getting manhandled. There were a number of issues (not all attributable to the OL, BTW), but not that.

I would imagine that TCU's O-line was not as big and strong as Michigan's D-line, but they ran the ball down their throats. Maybe some of our coaches could spend some time with the TCU coaches during the off season.

TCU has one of the biggest and best O line in the nation. All 5 will probably be drafted.

theChad Morris brought balance to Clemson, but was never...

1

Jan 9, 2023, 11:18 AM

able to fix the smash-mouth in his spread to the point that Clemson's running backs felt "spit on" - not my words, but theirs.

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/howard-says-qbs-running-the-ball-in-short-yardage-is-a-spit-in-the-face-12926

Morris' 2010 Tulsa Offense rushed for 2,830 yards, 217 /game, averaging 2.5 rushing TDs. He was gifted a fantastic RB in Ellington, then couldn't find an answer through Buise and many others. Dabo even sent theChad to Nevada to help find some answers attempting to meld some of Ault's Pistol philosophy into the Clemson O, potentially igniting the run game.

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/nevada-head-coach-chris-ault-talks-chad-morris-and-the-pistol-10727

It wasn't until theChad headed to SMU that the run game was fixed, Dabo exclaiming Clemson would run the ball entering the 2015 season. And then, a somewhat recruited rb star was born in Wayne Train Gallman. He turned 0 into 3, 3 into 5...

Identity is Immature Play Calling

Jan 9, 2023, 11:24 AM

I’m not sure what qualifies as an identity, but both backs were effective when allowed to run the ball.
The problem was lack of commitment to a mature game plan. When you’re running the ball well, there’s no reason to get cute and give the ball back…old school football says make them adjust to stop the run first, then the passing game opens.
I keep hearing how bad our receivers are, but DJ did not help them at all. I keep reading that our o line sucks, but yards per carry says they were just fine most of the time.
It’s officially the off season, put your microscopes away for a while…quit the hyper criticism and look in the mirror for a while. I’m sure something in your life needs attention.

The running game is not as good as you think. You can't just go by yards per carry. They can't run it consistently is the problem. When the defense is off balance, they can run it ok, but when the defense knows what's coming, they get shut down fairly effectively.

Re: Identity is Immature Play Calling

No.

When the defense stacks the box (which they did whenever it became apparent that DJU or CK2 didn’t have it), then our run game suffered.

To use the baseball metaphor, if the batter knows that the pitcher can only throw the fastball for strikes, then the fastball won’t work for even the OK hitters.

They still couldn't run it consistently when Watson and Lawrence were here.

Correct tdtiger. Everyone sees the 5-7 yard runs which is great but it's what the defense is giving you. Look at the Tennessee game, they couldn't run it when they got near the red zone. Teams will play bend don't break D until you get near the 35 yard line. You have to throw the ball to have a effective running game. A running QB helps as well.

And that generally ok running attack is without running one single play with the QB actually under center to facilitate quick hitting plays, and downhill running by the RBs. And add to it, IMO our hardest hitting most physical running back gets only a fraction of the total carriers and is not really featured situationally in tough yardage situations. (not at all a slight on Shipley, btw).

Correct me if I'm wrong but gainst Tenn McFadden played hurt and the starting Left guard was out.

Up until that game the OL was technically the best I'd seen here at Clemson, they do still get pushed around but technique wise they weren't bad. I think Thomas Austin will only improve that OL going forward and by alot. Really do wish the S&C program would get looked at though. The lack of push and the fact guys leave slower and with more bad weight does not sit well with me(yes there are some freaks that leave better Simmons and Etienne, but they are gifted by God and Batson and Co couldn't mess that up).

Re: Offensive overhaul

Jan 9, 2023, 2:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Offensive overhaul ]

Correct. And Parks (RG) was also injured. He was practicing in a green jersey prior to the OB due to a bum ankle like McFadden.

An ankle brace or tape thick enough to be a cast is not visible to the otherwise all-seeing and all-knowing, but it does impact your play. From getting in your stance to lateral quickness, to power when drive blocking and depending on which ankle is hurt it can really impact how you brace against a pass rush.

But with that said there were missed blitz pickups that have nothing to do with injuries.

You are correct about Strength & Conditioning. There has been a step backwards in the past 3 years in S&C. It is obvious for all to see. Why? I don't know the reason but the increase in injuries and bigger bellies is plain as day.

Re: Offensive overhaul

Jan 9, 2023, 6:51 AM

Our offense’s identity, whether DJU or CK2 was ar QB, is already run first.

Our decision to start Blake Miller at RT says it all.

B.Miller projected very well (after both Spring and pre-season fall camp) as a run-blocker. We had hoped that his pass protection skills would develop in time for us to get through the few weak early season opponents; by mid-season we hoped that B.Miller would be OK at pass protection.

With J.McFadden’s replacement at LT probably being either Marcus Tate or Tristan Leigh (both of whom are big men), our offense philosophy will be even more run oriented in 2023.

Re: Offensive overhaul

Jan 9, 2023, 4:27 PM

I dont know that run first is a great long term option for Clemson but I did have a thought a few days ago.... We really had great personnel to run a pro-style offense this past year. DJ was more of a pocket passer... 2 great TEs... 2 great RBs... it would have opened the field up some for Ngata, AW, BC.
Obviously that would have been a huge change... but just thinking out loud.

Maybe we should hire Kliff Kingsbury to improve the passing game but agree we need to feature Ship and Phil.
