Obama lies again on Romney & GM .....

It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others.

The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

There's not really much to say on the matter.

I agree that Obama keeps continuing to mischaracterize Romney's original position. It seems very trite at this point.

I really don't see the point in reassessing the veracity of the claims in the op-ed piece when the first sentence has been completely invalidated. For the most part, the automakers have come back and are reasonably alive and well (especially Ford). It seems rather pointless to debate whether Romney's strategy would or would not have been more effective than the bailout because it is a hypothetical. I suspect that either approach would have worked. The real problems had to do with what Romney laid out in the latter part of the piece, which are the same things that Obama's team addressed. It's unclear whether Romney's approach would have the saved the American people more money from what little I've researched the matter. Sure, he can say that, but we'll never know.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.
