Nutrition for players

Mar 8, 2013, 2:23 PM

I'm a little upset when I read that Sammy wasn't eating right or didn't the right nutrition last year. I don't know the exact reasons behind that, whether it was on him or related to his illness or on our program.

I firmly believe and I think most research will show that nutrition plays a huge role in building muscle, staying healthy etc. I understand that we have a training table now aka PAW dining? Is this correct?

Over the past year I have seen several posts of players on twitter that raised concern for me regarding the nutrition/food issue. One example was a player talking about eating at Arby's, another example recently a player posts he's starving because he hadn't eaten all day. several other similar examples exist.

That's fine for mediocre programs but for top programs like ours that
have millions invested in coaches, facilities, etc, these are the "little" things that set you apart. I know it may seem petty but these world class athletes should be on a world class diet and nutritional program to gain muscle mass. I don't know- maybe the program is already in place and much of it may fall on the players to take advantage of that.

I think per NCAA rules you can only eat at the athletic dining facility once per day.

Watkins said he was skipping breakfast, which I'd bet 75% of us do. It isn't great for you, but a nutritionist can't make sure 110 guys eat breakfast every day.

That's on Sammy, and he's turning over a new leaf and doing a lot better with his nutrition now.

If that's true, then you are right it is ultimately on the players and I'm sure the staff has given them a template of what to do on their own time. I hope he makes the changes so that this year he breaks out to reach his fullest potential. I think he will have a monster year.
