Norvell's culture.... soon to be known as "Transfer Starter U" because they

would rather build their yearly starting lineups through the transfer portal than actually recruiting and developing players. For the portal players coming to FSU it is purely transactional - loyalty and getting an education aren't even a consideration. It's a short term mercenary "what can you do for me" relationship built on a foundation of jello.

What he has now are players who have been in the program two or more years that have been working and waiting for their shot at the starting lineup but are quickly relegated to permanent backup because he immediately goes to the portal for an already developed starter. Why do you think Rodemaker left?? Norvell was searching for his next QB1 in the portal instead of investing and working with Rodemaker over the next 8 months to mold him into a starting QB for next year.

Norvell is trying to avoid the inevitable falloff that happens when teams are built this way because he has no real bench of developed/developing players. Getting your starting lineup from the portal is like a drug addiction - once you start it is hard to stop because to do so results in some on-field growing pains as HS recruited players develop through real game experience. At this point Norvell appears to be a portal addict - choosing an unsustainable quick fix in the hopes of immediate success as opposed to a longer term developed player pipeline that eventually leads to longer term sustained success.

Eventually this "transactional" portal culture he has adopted is going to affect his ability to recruit. This past FSU HS recruiting class may very well be his best but also his last that is this highly rated. With this much portal use to bring in a starting lineup, parents and HS players are going to see that he would rather bring in transfer portal starters than working through the process of developing a young player. Why would any highly ranked recruit want to go into that environment??
