Its the old mentality of reward what you think a team has the potential to do

rather than what a team has done. Thankfully, the bottom of the poll and next teams our aren't something I've had to pay attention to for a while now.

Where it does not matter who you have played? That may be the most absurd thing I have heard in quite some time.
No, it matters. Your opponents absolutely matter when determining where a team should be ranked.

Remember when we opened the season on the road against UGA and FSU in our first 3 games? Weren't ranked when we started 1-2. "Yeah we may have a losing record but look at who we've played" That excuse is awfully cootish.

Did I say anything about being ranked?

I simply posit that yes, it matters who you play. A win or loss to Alabama will be viewed differently than a win or loss to the Citadel.
And if my memory serves me correctly, we most certainly were a top 25 team that season despite those losses, as evidenced by streak of several Ws as the season progressed.
Whether you like them or not I expect Ole Miss and Oklahoma to do the same. If they had lost to Furman or Vanderbilt then my opinion of them would most certainly change.

they're being ranked based on some hypothetical, subjective definition of how good they are which is the whole reason the playoff system was finally put in place.

It matters because only teams in the SEC (exception is Oklahoma) with a losing record deserve to be ranked in Top 25.....Total BS because SEC (exception is Alabama) is now a watered down conference and clearly not any better than several of the other conferences....There is NO WAY 8 teams in the SEC are Top 25 teams.....just look at last year and final results....and Ole Miss with an 1 - 2 record does not deserve or should still be ranked in Top 25....

So it matters who they beat, but not who they lost to? Give me a break.

Similarly, I don't understand how a team like Stanford can be ranked #7 at 2-0 after beating two unranked teams.

Our FPI is #5 in the nation and we have played 3 games. Stanford has only played 2 and is #12 in FPI. They haven't played a ranked team yet and according to their schedule, won't be playing a ranked team the rest of the year. Make more sense now?

Good enough to get 21 point leads over the #1 and #2 ranked teams in last weeks polls.

before the half!! They play well but then realize that they are just not very good and begin playing to their true capability.

Compiles a decent record, they'll earn their way back into the top 25--but right now they don't deserve to be ranked...and it's important to remember these rankings don't mean doodly until late Oct

That's not Top 25 material by any stretch no matter the competition or conference.
Pitt would beat Ole Miss. That's where they rank.

It does when your preseason rank(hype) is completely

unwarranted. Oklahoma and Notre Dame were not deserving of lofty rankings. Nor was Texas a top 11 team, that's just sad since they beat an overrated ND team in OT rendering that victory less stellar.
Rankings are subjective and some teams get by on their potential rather than true production on the field. SEC might have ranked teams that are just over .500 records based on the "mystique" of the conference. Clemson should be the #2 team right now but since we played much below our capability it cost us. So, there is obviously a disconnect with some voters appreciation for talent and potential as Bama is only team with more than we have at this point. But I digress, it will work itself out eventually. Beat Tech is all I know right now ??
