"Needs" vs "Wants". A lot of people these days seem to

confuse these two things. Like, we really NEED this player, or that player. In actuality, anything to do with sports is more a WANT than a need.

For several years, back when I was still gainfully employed at the chemical plant, I used to participate in a voluntary "letters to Santa" program at work. Some of the local elementary schools would send batches of letters that kids had written to Santa, requesting various things for Christmas. The ones that made it to us were purportedly from poor kids families, who probably didn't stand a chance of getting much for Christmas otherwise, unless outside forces intervened.

I filled these needs for one family a year for several years, and felt good about it, for myself and for them. But, as happens with most things, freeloaders will try and spoil it for the truly needy. If a kid is TRULY poor, he would ask for a new pair of shoes, or a new tee shirt, or other real necessities. Suddenly, I found myself reading letters from kids asking for a new pair of Air Jordans, or Tommy Hilfiger shirts. And, the general tone of the letter indicated these were not really needs, but WANTS. So, I have to admit, that as far as any presents from me, those kids did not even get coal in their stockings that year, and that was the last year I participated in the program.

As far as the sports Needs vs Wants, it seems a lot of us are getting hung up on "star" ratings, sometimes to our detriment. Let us not forget, Clemson, at least to this point in time, has NEVER had a #1 rated recruiting class in football, and now, with the advent of NIL, probably never will. Some of our greatest players, like Grady Jarrett, for example, were not that highly rated coming out of high school. Yes, a certain minimum amount of athletic talent is required. But, I am a FIRM believer that coaching and DEVELOPMENT of latent talent has a far greater impact on the outcome of games than does just natural ability.

Just a few random musings on a Friday, you may Carry On now.

Nope that's still a need.

If I want to retire this year, then I need at least 2 million dollars. That's for sure.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

Since when did Christmas become about needs?
