Need rules explanation from you refs...

Nov 18, 2014, 12:29 PM

Last night in the Pittsburg/Tennessee game, a the DB from TN intercepted a Pittsburg pass near the front of the endzone. He ran parallel to the goal line...unpursued...he did not kneel and he did not try to return...he then turned left and ran 5-7 yeards to exit the back of the end zone...of his own will. There was no "momentum" involved.

How is that NOT a safety?

I likewise thought the same way.

A safety occurs when the defense is responsible for the ball ending up behind the offense's goal line. A touchback occurs when the offense is responsible for the ball ending up behind the defense's goal line.

the ball ending up behind the offense's (their own) goal line -- e.g. intentionally running out of the back of the end zone to prevent a TD by the defense, punt snap going over the punter's head, etc.

If he had crossed the goal line onto the field of play then yes, it would be a safety.

He can play punt, pass, and kick back there as long as the

ball doesn't come out of the endzone - cross the goal line - and then return. Didn't see it, just saying. I did see a gTa fella make an excellent read and great break on a poorly executed pass, on a poorly called play, at an extremely inappropriate time, and run it back to the other goal line - and somehow neither he, the coaches, the other players, or mad hatter, jr. got credit. Need a ref for that too.

That's simple

If you never cross the goal line into the field of play then it's not a safety.

Had he carried the ball into the endzone from the field of play (and it wasn't the momentum of the interception which caused him to do so) then it would be a safety, but if the player caught the interception in the endzone, never crossed the goal line into the field of play, and then took a knee, was tackled, or ran out of the back of the endzone then it's a touchback.
