I grew up a fan as did every boy in the South.
I know it better than most. I got free tickets to all the Charlotte races and have tested myself driving cop cars on that track.
As a kid we all aspired to be "FireBall".
I have been to Jr Johnson's Chicken ranch.
NASCAR today does not resemble any of that. Many still are fans, but this is nothing like what I grew up with.
I have not watched a race in years.

Too many changes to try to make it like other sports when what made it cool was how different it was. And don’t even get me started about the numbers up on the front fender instead of the door where they belong. That was the final final straw for me.

2k® is far left of me and lives near the Brushy Mountains where boot leg guys are still revered.
Politics aside aside, once there was a 26 mile Marathon from Wilkes to the site of the famous 'Union Grove Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention' site.
I ran that several times, but never raced it. I would do maybe 3 hours and my Bride would ride along with me on her bike. It was a fun day.
The great music and beer at the finish were well earned.

I still watch the races, and remember my dad (class of 57) saying he raced Fireball Roberts at Daytona with his Buick Roadmaster. Said it cost $20 to lose, but he got to race him. 😉

Just had the " big one " took out 20 or so cars. Happens every time on these super speedway.

It only happens in restrictive plate racing that starves the engine for air not allowing the engines full horsepower to be used!!!

I gave up on NASCAR right after Dale senior got killed, and yes most everybody raised in the South knew NASCAR, and I've been to at least 20-25 Darlington 500 races. The first race that I seen Dale senior drive in was at Darlington, and I loved that Bad boy driving he done. Dale's way was go ahead, move over, or he would move them. And yes, I was one of those grown men that cried when he was killed!!!

I am near 78 and have a different perspective as to it all.
I understand this is not that.
It started as stock car racing and now all cars are basically the same.
It was a Southern thing, once they abandoned us for a bigger market, it was different.
I am not saying that was better or worse, but different.

They slowly started losing me when they started making the cars all look alike then took a southern sport national. First it was them rednecks from Dawsonville are killing everyone on super speedways. Instead of letting GM innovate and improve, they started putting their NASCAR finger on the scales to make things equal. So they let the GM cars modify back glasses. Then they raised the Tbirds, changed compression ratios. The Chevys were still dominating the short tracks. None of that satisfied so they came out with restrictor plates on the carbs. All of this was to supposedly slow things down and make it safer. In actuality they bunched the cars up to have more super speedway mega wrecks. When the cars started all looking indistinguishable except for the make emblem it just lost something for me. They took innovation out of the sport.

from what you said, it was the same for me.
You picked what ever car driver or make of car and pulled for him/them after Sunday dinner, the men all gathered under the big shed and sat on drink crates if you were a kid, but grown men had chairs. Real, locally made chairs with woven straw seats, listening to the races on the radio.! remember Fireball Roberts died in a fiery crash, I remember when the cars in the race we taken out of local dealers stock inventory and significantly souped up'. Of course they paid something for the use of it, had to pay for damaged cars.
It just got too far away from that in the early 80s fir me. No more socializing with good natured ribbing about thy this or that brand car was useless junk, etc. Good time for you boys to see what good men did with family during Racin' season.
TV ruined Nascar for me. If you like it today, I am happy for you and glad you do.

I’m a woman and I grew up a NASCAR fan because of my dad and grandfather. They were friends of David Pearson so they always pulled for Car #21. I saw Dale Earnhardt race for the 1st time at Darlington around 1979 I think and he was my favorite after that. I have lost interest and rarely watch anymore and couldn’t name many drivers now. My husband has never been a fan and thinks it’s boring watching cars go around in circles for hours.

Racing was so much better back then. The Allison brothers and Cale Yarborough. I remember when Cale and one of the brothers, I think it was Donnie? got into a fight on the racetrack 😆😆

There was a time when I wouldn't miss a race, if it was to far to drive I would be planted in front of tube. Grew up in the heart of it. Harry Gant lives about 3 miles from me so he was a favorite. Have lived on Earnhardt Dr for over 30 years, house number 88 but long before Jr. Still will fast forward through one on occasion, like last night. Was at Wilkesboro for the last lap and at Daytona the day the music died. Good times, concrete bleachers on back stretch (now front) at Darlington was the best party in the universe. Haven't watched or been to a full race in 15yrs. The downhill for me really started when they moved the Southern 500 to Cali. Also remember when Winston passed out free smokes at the races.

They lost me years ago too. I haven't watched a race in years and don't care anything about it. This from someone who was glued to the tv every Sunday afternoon back in the day.

I was born in Dec of 62 and attended my first race in March of 63. I have a pic of the King holding me in the pit. Il love racing but will admit it’s not the same these days. I always pull for the southern drivers and there are not many left to cheer.

My Dad worked in Daytona after the Korean War. He raced Harleys on the beach and knew Fireball. I was born there in 59 at Halifax Hospital across from the new track and Dad named me after him. My Dad was actually a Mopar man. He bought a 1967 Plymouth GTX new while Richard Petty was winning so much with it. My older brother has it now.
