Cal Poly (13-19) wins NCAA Tournament 1st round game tonight

Mar 19, 2014, 9:04 PM

This is an example of ALL that is wrong with the NCAA Men BB Tournament. A team with a losing record like Cal Poly (13-19) from a looser of a conference gets in and a team from a power conference like Clemson doesn't.

Disagree entirely

Win your conference go to the tournament. Were the field much smaller you may have an argument, but they won their conference and earned their ticket. We had exactly the same chance before us and didn't.

You just said we had the same chance to win the ACC

Mar 19, 2014, 9:57 PM

as they did to win the Big Sky?

Hmmm.

Odds, no

Chance, yes.

I should perhaps use the word opportunity.

yes, it is relative...

Mar 20, 2014, 7:29 AM [ in reply to You just said we had the same chance to win the ACC ]

In this situation clemson prob had a better chance to win the acc tournament than cal poly.

They had a losing record which means they were prob beat by most of the teams in their conference. Clemson on the other hand proved it could play with any one in the acc.

I disagree when you are upset about not being one of the 68 teams then you really didn't deserve it and you have no chance of winning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It should be the top 68 teams in the country, end of story.***

My take

Mar 19, 2014, 10:44 PM [ in reply to It should be the top 68 teams in the country, end of story.*** ]

I love the automatic bids because it removes the bias of opinions and gives every Div1 team a chance to make the dance independent of opinion and bias.

To argue otherwise, to me, would be the equivalent of saying the ACC (or any conference) should vote for a conference champ rather than settle it on the court.

I like how the smaller schools get a shot.

Mar 19, 2014, 10:01 PM

If you aren't in the top 15 then you really don't deserve a chance as a major university. Just my opinion. Regular season should count for something. Just like football. If you aren't top 4 then I don't think you should have a chance.

Am I reading you right. Only the top 4 in football should

be in the championship field but you support a 13-19 basketball team being in the national championship field?

Which is why I would like to see a 16 team playoff in

Mar 19, 2014, 11:17 PM [ in reply to I like how the smaller schools get a shot. ]

football - to give some of the smaller schools, or schools that are not traditional powers or from traditional power conferences a shot. It's what I love about the NCAA basketball tournament.

The fact is, in football, just as in basketball, despite hype and perception, there are numerous smaller teams or non-traditional powers that have had great seasons and very are capable of beating some of the higher ranked, traditional powers.

At least in the basketball tourney, playoff spots are earned, winners are determined on the court (field of play), and the little guys get a shot at the big boys. That's the way it should be.

There is nothing right with the conference tournament winner getting into the tournament. The selection committee can surely take 2 min and look at the conference records and how those teams did in the tournament and get an automatic bid from those (maybe take the order they finish in the regular season and the conference tournament and average those for a tournament bid or take the overall conference winning percentage of the teams with the conference tournament included?)

I'm not sure

Mar 20, 2014, 12:59 AM [ in reply to Re: Cal Poly (13-19) wins NCAA Tournament 1st round game tonight ]

I'm no sure why we'd want the field for the championship to be determined even more based on opinion rather than actual achievement. It seems exactly opposite the prevailing argument about college football.

I don't care how a conference determines who their champion is, and I believe they should be able to decide for themselves how they want to nominate their guaranteed rep to the tournament. But there should be some set standard for that conference and every team in that conference should know what must be achieved, on the court, to get the bid. Be it regular season conference record or tournament, I don't care.

Though, if we did go down the route you suggest then the conference tournaments would become much less important as teams off the bubble (based on opinions) would have NO path to earn their way into the field.
