Cyclone Fanatics msg board....been very good to Clemson...

Dec 18, 2021, 7:03 PM

But I have noticed a slight "anti-South" attitude in a few of them, not sure what that's about...

I grew up in SC and moved to the midwest late 1987 for work and stayed there until I retired and moved back in 2014. The people in the rural and small town midwesterners are down home and friendly people once you get to know them. For the most part, the midwestern values and beliefs are like ours. Other than SC, I couldn't have raised my children in a better place.

I think that’s the difference. In my experience, upstate folks are nice to everyone, not just “when you get to know them”

Met people from all 50 states while in navy....

..and around the world; everyone for sure had their regional/ethnic/racial/religious/ad infinitum biases, which I guess is to be expected and maybe just ego and part of the human condition, I don't pretend to know. But the hardest folks to deal with, especially in the "regional" category, were those who knew every fault of others but weren't aware of any of their own. Like when I was told I "talk funny" because I'm from SC, to which I responded to the Northern fellow, "..to me, it's YOU that talks funny". But I did find most Midwestern folks, and those from Montana, the Dakotas and other places up there to be very friendly.....

Fair enough! From Seneca, in Florida now and have noticed a huge difference in the everyday friendliness and treatment of strangers. Everyone seems in such a hurry all the time.

I think it’s more a rural and city thing. I grew up in rural SC and we were taught that yankees were not friendly. After graduating from CU in 1984 we lived in several different places and much of my children’s school age years were in Erie PA and South Florida. The people in Erie were as friendly as any place we’d ever been. Miami and Fort Lauderdale was a lot more urban and you barely even got to know your neighbors. Our experience has been that people in rural areas and small towns are just more friendly - regardless of south or north.

My theory on Urban vs. Country fued....

Dec 18, 2021, 7:48 PM

People in tightly packed urban areas get on each other's nerves a lot more than country folk based simply on proximity. Who is their to get pissed at when one lives between Furman and Nixville, SC..:)..?

I remember a time when you drove through you neighborhood and right before passing another car heading your way you would stick your hand up and wave to the other driver.......and that was in the 90s.
