My FIL was an English professor. So I absolutely hate being corrected by my wife. IDGAF. IMO language evolves over time w sub cultures so who is to say what is right and wrong.

I think my parents showed up for high school graduation.
There were no "award days" for anyone at any time in my 12 years that I recall.

FALSE. We didn't have those dumb graduations for kindergarten and 6th grade

but we definitely had awards day at the end of each year.
Maybe you just don't remember cause you never won awards, like most improved handwriting in the 3rd grade for instance.

I remember a buddy of mine never missed a day of school in high school years, and the principal mailed him a piece of paper memorializing that incredible achievement. I was at his house when he opened the envelope, balled it up and through in the trash can across the room.
I do recall it getting mentioned in one of our classes though.

I never understood it, we could have been ######## blood and she'd be all "Just make it until 11am so it doesn't count against your attendance".

I remember my freshman year they had some crazy attendance policy that we could miss 30 days or something.
First day of class I'm all "Let me start planning some time off." I did a lot of duck hunting and fishing that year.

while attending Aiken County public schools. In fact, I think maybe he and all his brothers and sisters had perfect attendance in all years or something like that. Didn't make him any smarter, but there you go.

the summer before he went to the Bears, he worked out at Aiken High. Pretty sure I was an incoming freshman. I witnessed him repping on squats with the bar maxed out with 45lb plates. Also witnessed him dunk a basketball.
He had the fastest 1st-step off the line I've ever witnessed in person. He was an incredible athlete.
And he brought a loaf of bread and bologna (sometimes ham) to the school every day and ate the whole thing...with mustard...for lunch.

Looking back on how much time is completely wasted in school, and how little learning actually goes on in a given day, I won't give a second thought to letting my kids skip for a decent reason.
I fully intend on taking family vacations a week after Spring Break to get a double break from crowds.
What are they going to do, send a truancy officer after me? They've got families whose kids haven't been back to school since COVID.

Only other time I missed multiple days was for chicken pox.
I felt like I was going to die. Still caught #### that afternoon from my mom as to why I hadn't finished homework and that I'd better buck up by tomorrow to go back to school.

perfect attendance all year, then all 2 years, etc and finally they were like we have a student who has NEVER MISSED A DAY OF CLASS HIS WHOLE SCHOOL CAREER THIS IS INCREDIBLE and made a big show of it and....
he didn't come get his award because he wasn't there.
True story. Also, he went to Clemson, which was rare at our HS cause we was up in NC.
My year it was just me and Sega Bob from our HS who went to Clemson.
