Missing tombstone in the graveyard

Oct 3, 2022, 1:24 PM

Why is there not a tombstone for the 1981 National Championship game? The other championship games are there. There are games from earlier dates there. Does anyone know?

I think because the tradition originated after the win in Tallahassee in 1989.

I thought that too. However, there's a separate tombstone with previous ones that would qualify...but 1981 in Miami is not listed.

Question about the graveyard.

Interesting that you mentioned it's origin. FSU has something similar. It is called the sod cemetery.

Here is the criteria for a sod game:
Road game underdog
Bowl game
ACC title
National title

Started in 1962. A visit to FSU needs to include a viit to the sod cemetery.

I wonder if Clemson got the idea from that visit to Tallahassee.

Yep, that’s where the tombstone idea originated. Some people were pissed when FSU took some sod out of our field…

I believe

When first put into place it was only true away games, and not neutral site games. I know that's been changed int more recent years, but that's likely why it wasn't there originally

There is one that’s missing but that’s not it. In 1950 Clemson beat #17 (AP Poll) Mizzou in Columbia, 34-0.

I emailed Tim Bourret about it and he said when they did the tombstones in 1989, previous AP polls had not been complied (I took this to mean not available to them). So they didn’t have any way of knowing that ranking. Since then, the AP has release all their weekly polls and they are available on the internet.

So if CU wanted to add one, the ‘50 Mizzou game would be it.

of course that doesn’t explain the one tombstone that includes the 10 games prior to the ‘89 FSU game.
