I think he found the hill he is going to die on. He just doesn't seem to want to adapt to change and is going to continue to do it his way. Maybe his way will turn out OK but hard to see the vision right now.

Does Norvell have a terrible coaching staff too? Because 75% of our staff consists of former players and Dabo's friends. None of whom have any significance coaching experience.

Several schools got very WR from the portal and FSU was one of them from USuC no less.

Clemson isn't going to bring in 10+ players from the portal like Norvell. He was at FSU, a program that was a dumpster fire with a bad roster. Clemson doesn't have a bad roster. Clemson has a bad coaching staff that can't develop our players.
With that said, we do still need to use the portal. But we aren't in a desperate position like Norvell was. 3-4 players per year is plenty for us. We don't need half of our roster coming from the portal. Once Norvell rattles off top 10 classes annually, he'll stop using the portal as much.
Yes, we need to use the portal. No, we don't need to use it like FSU. Dabo just made several really terrible hiring decisions.

He complained for years about up tempo and read option offenses until he realized they weren’t going away. He went and got himself offensive coordinators and QBs to run that scheme and the rest is history. When everything around you changes you have to follow suit; even if it’s contrary to your opinion of the way it should be.

Norvell inherited a dumpster fire and had zero of his own recruits. For him to rebuild the team as he saw fit, he HAD to use the portal. He had NO recruits of his own, and when he did, he was limited to how many he could get. He had no other choice but to use the portal.
Dabo, on the other hand, has been recruiting for years and this is HIS team - whether we approve of all of the players or not. HE selected them, and HE is happy with them and HE sees potential in each of them, whether that's right or wrong.
There is no comparison between Norvell's situation at FSU, or any other new coach for that matter, with Dabo's at Clemson.

Some are good, most are not all that good. Look at UofSC, for example. Tons of portal kids, and 9 out of 10 of them don’t seem to be crap.
The ONLY reason you hear portal names at FSU, and automatically assume they’re great, is because they’re 2-deep is literally full of transfers. LSU is also full of transfers - what did they do to compete with FSU? Nothing!
You can be great with great recruits and reloading. It’s not like Bama, UGa, and Ohio State have a 2-deep made up of transfers. They do it through recruiting… and solid execution.
The portal didn’t lose to UofSC, UT, or Duke. It was execution. That in itself is a trending problem, but it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PORTAL.

Well, I guess it’s coaching? Maybe we need to look outside of the family tree and hire experienced coaches.

but the situations have major differences - an established program vs one where recruiting will have to catch up because the staff is relatively new.
Both Norvell and Kelly used the portal heavily and according to the "experts" Kelly won the portal day, but still, both did well.
Kelly's most prized portal players seem to be the 4 & 5 star DBs he brought on board to fix his pass defense[?] and they got run the other night.
It's ok to point out VPI or UL took on portal players, let's hope Clemson is neither of those programs, or Coleman at FSU, but there's a flip side to the portal coin as well.
