Michigan Ranking

Oct 13, 2022, 10:21 AM

I did a little quick analysis and here's the good and bad about Michigan football this year so far:

On average, they've outscored their opponents 43-11, and in total it's 258-68.
They rank #29 in team offense and #5 in team defense
That's all I have for the positives because all of that and anything else is pretty much shattered by the nature of their competition, if you can call it that.

They've played Colorado St, Hawaii, UConn, Maryland, Iowa and Indiana so far and won each game.
The combined records of those 6 teams is 15-21, for an average of 41%
Here's the worst of it - those teams average 104 out of 131 in Team Offense and 84 out of 131 in Team Defense.
Of those teams, Colorado St and Iowa currently rank 130 and 131 respectively in Team Offense. That's next to last and dead last. UConn is 123 and Hawaii is 118. Maryland was the best offensive team at 26 and Indiana at 97.
Team Defense was a little better. Hawaii is 124th, Indiana at 108, Colorado St at 94 and UConn at 91. Maryland is 78th and Iowa was the best defensive unit at 9th.
In short - their competition sucks.

As far as Clemson goes and our opponents:
We rank 55th in Total Offense and 24th in Total Defense
Our opponents are a combined 21-14 with an average 59% winning percentage
Take out Furman, and our opponents average Team Offense ranking is 90th and Team Defense is 72nd. Furman ranks 29th in Team Offense and 25th in Team Defense, but in the FCS.
The highest ranked offensive unit we've played is Wake Forest at 41st. Highest ranked defense is NC State at 17th.
The worst offense is Boston College at 119 and Georgia Tech at 113. The worst defense was Louisiana Tech at 120th.

Oh, the number of ranked teams that Michigan has beaten - 0 (unless you count being ranked in the ESPN Bottom 10 - then the count is TWO!)
The number of ranked teams that Clemson has beaten - 2.

All you need to know right now is Michigan is a historically great football school, made the Playoffs last year and has exceptional athletes. Oh, more thing, they still have to play Penn State and Ohio State.

Michigan's SOS ranking in currently in the 111 range...

per Sagarin although TeamRankings has them as high as 44th which is ridiculous IMO.

I think it's fair to say A LOT of teams would be undefeated against that same schedule.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Michigan is over-rated this year as in prior years at this point in the season - they have not played anyone yet and even Penn State this week is over-rated as usual! Let's see how they do against a legitimate power team first before we place them in the top ten!
