football conference, but they do need a conference for their other sports; adding Stanford & Cal gives the ACC more stability in that regard. Making ND-Stanford a conference game would also give the Irish more scheduling flexibility, since they already play Stanford every year.

It would be in a sense under their current agreement to play 5 ACC games per year. Watch Phillips agree to make Stanford permanent in the rotation to buy their vote.
