MBA Programs - What Say Yall?

I’ll finally be graduating from ASU this year with a BA in History and a Business Minor. My GPA projects to be in the 3.6-3.7 range when I’m done.

ASU was the best option for me for active duty military and I was able to go without paying anything out of pocket and still save my GI bill for later.

I’m looking at MBA programs and curious if any of y’all have an opinion or experience in this realm. I know there are quite a few on here in the business world. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a sweet deal.

I have no dog in such a fight... I have family that served, and fully retired that passed their GI to their child and/or spouse.

The history and business mix are interesting. Sounds like you're steering toward business. I would think quite a few options are good, but from my limited experience, it appears finance is always a great one. Accounting, advisor, etc... If that's your strong suit anyway.

Good luck

I don't post here much but this intrigued me as I was in a similar situation many many years ago. I decided not to pursue a MBA so went right into the world of finance and been here for 27 years in finance world.

My honest advice......I personally don't see the need for a MBA in this job market. If I was you I would see what jobs are out there for you and find one that 1. You would enjoy working at/in 2. A job that would allow for upward promotion over time.

Then work as hard as you can and you will be rewarded.

Just my .02......not once in my 27 years in finance has a potential client OR employer asked me if I had a MBA. I just don't see the value.

Good luck

in business. I would say it’s the best for value and recognition. All online too. Never have to even be in the State.

my 2 cents - what do you want to do? For example, Clemson has an MBA specializing in Business Analytics. If there is some specialty area you want to get into, probably would get you a step ahead.

If not, contacts are what you are looking for, and yep, MBA programs can provide job opportunities also. I saw where Clemson has 93% of their MBA grads with jobs - and based on my limited exposure to their program, I would say they do a good job with business contacts and opportunities for students. Online degrees may not provide as good an opportunity.

If you have good contacts and can get the job you want, I would delay the MBA myself.

I agree. Most of the time an MBA will get you from

Sales Rep to Sales Director / Accountant or Finance to Director level

Usually it’s to separate you from that lower echelon. But really that is just when the time comes. My wife and I got ours because our work asked us to get it. It opened up a lot of opportunity for me, it for her it was a HIGE game changer. Again both of us were well into our careers with a new child. Thus why online was so good of an option

Personally, I'd find a job you like doing something you want to do first, then

look at the MBA. Above all else, don't settle for some crap job doing something you don't want to do in hopes that you can move up. In all my years working at a bank I saw very few people have any luck with this.

Don't work too hard, just be good at what you do.

So, he may want to look into becoming a transnational, although I'm not sure how much that operation costs.

I’m not sure how active duty applies here, BUT I would advise anyone to get some real world business experience before getting your MBA. Without the references to your real life experiences, I think you’d be missing out on a lot.

It depends on what you want to do.

An MBA with no business experience doesn't hold the weight as on the job experience. Your military background will look favorably on your experience to get a job you want. I would 100 percent hire a military vet over a kid fresh out of college or business school.

Once you get one of those fancy corporate managin' gigs...Fire everyone. Who need's em? That way, you'll get good bonuses for the 2-3 years you'll be at that job. Who cares after that, amiright?

If you can't fire everyone, send the remaining jobs to India. That's been working great for decades!! I mean it must--companies keep doing it! It only takes about 3-4 people in India to do the job of 1 person on shore, but we pay them like $.10 an hour, so what's the difference? And you're gonna have data breaches because they don't care, but again, you're only ghana have that job for 2-3 years before you leave (or are forced to leave) to go your next gig, so what's the difference?

I’d look hard at joint MBA/JD programs. The JD will carry more weight than the MBA. A law background helps in so many areas of life too, it’s a versatile education you’ll probably use far more than what you learn MBA wise. Plus the rigor/competitiveness of law school teaches good life lessons. You’d tack on one more year of school, but probably worth it.

an MBA, even more than undergrad degree, is all about the payback. When you're evaluating programs, be sure to ask the placement rate, the average starting salary following graduation, and largest employers who recruit from the program.

Also, ASU coeds used to do an undie run every year. But not anymore.

Did the Entrepreneurship and Innovation MBA program for working adults via the downtown Gville building in the square.

It was a very rewarding experience, I learned a lot and have been advanced in my career as a result.
