Unless schools have told conferences they will pay the “break the contract” fee, our ex/commissioner is laughing himself to sleep every night.
What if ESPN sues for punitive damages even if the school pays the break up ? ESPN could argue they invested “x” dollars and these schools cost them “y” dollars?

The GOR was created immediately after Maryland was poached by the B10. The ACC had few options at the time (same as now) so the GOR was implemented as an impediment to keep the conference functional (as strong as possible). At the time, no one anticipated the current landscape so working to keep the ACC together seemed like a good idea. In retrospect, for schools with value like Clemson, FSU and a few others, the GOR is an impediment but when it was signed the landscape was much different.

It may have saved the ACC at the time. The huge fly in the ointment was signing a 30 year contract with no inflation clause or clause for renegotiating the contract at certain intervals. Who the hail signs a 30 year salary contract with no room to account for inflation or a raise?

When the GOR was signed I thought there were three "look in" opportunities. Obviously I wasn't part of the negotiations but I thought a "look in" would be the period when an analysis was done of the current market and monetary worth of the GOR to determine the "market value" of the contract and adjust accordingly. With three such opportunities it would keep us in the same neighborhood as all the other conferences based on our value relative to them. Of course that doesn't seem to be what's happening so what is the point of the "look in"? Do they just look in the safety deposit box to make sure the GOR is still in it?!?

You are correct about the look in windows. I would get that the concern is when the next window comes along. If it's 5 or 6 years from now, a lot of schools could reasonably be afraid the look in may not yield the desired result.

In 2013/2016 the member schools of the ACC voted unanimously to secure stability and permanence. They accomplished that primary objective. In doing so they voluntarily bypassed both the risk and the market driven revenue growth to get their BIG/SEC envy "network" and to keep their weak sisters at-par with the 2 or 3 members that are the sole revenue drivers.
Now, now they want anything but stability and permanence as they reap the huge shortfall that results from their fear factor contract.
At some point, sooner than later, the adults in the BIG, Big 12 and SEC will jointly stoop down, extend reduced share membership invites and end the misery and stupidity of the failure that was the ACC. The end game will be three 20-odd super conferences, totally separated from the NCAA in an NFL style arrangement in both commercial and competitive relationships.
The template for the reduced share membership is being set tonight as the BIG pulls in Oregon and Washington at a revenue level not equal to the present members. Over time they will reach parity but at the outset they negotiate from weakness and that comes with a cost.

sports. It's crazy to me how much we have lost perspective with college athletics. Sheer madness.
Second, the narrative in expansion at the time was "TV Markets", not "overall brand." WVU was hardly a "no brainer" to add. And I say that as someone who had absolutely no issue with WVU joining.

You are spitting straight facts! Except the reduced share part. Its true Wa and Or will receive a reduced share. At least, according to teports. I dont know how it would compare to Nebraska, Md, and Rutgers. All 3 received reduced shares/amounts that escalated as time passed. I read it was because membership in the B1G includes ownership of the B1G network. The B1G was way ahead on this but paid a lot to have it created because a conference network was a novel idea. Jim Delaney pitches to idea to ESPeNis and the B1G was low balled. Delaney took the idea to FOX and they were on board. The reduced shares reflect the cost of ownership in the network. Only USC and UCLA will enter as full shares from the beginning. I believe it is because of the Los Angeles market, prestige, or some combination.

Let's be honest NO conference has had financial success, ie profitability, from their in-house networks.
SEC has reduced and restructured their costs several times including greatly downsizing their dedicated Charlotte SEC network broadcast center.
The individual per-team networks in the PAC quickly face planted.
And the Longhorn network instantly became the Longgone Network.
The networks value are a rounding error in the present right's contract negotiations.

leaking that it had invited FSU or Clemson to join? That would pressure the ACC to do or die and any conference doing the inviting would be concerned that the ACC might DO. In fact, if the ACC made Clemson whole I believe our BOT would stick with the ACC.
I don't think Clemson is in a position to have to move if the ACC doesn't come across with an equal amount that other conferences are offering. I believe a good faith measure would appease Clemson.
I want out. Flat, hate the ACC and have for many decades but they won't let me vote.
