Maybe Wes Goodwin was the brains

Behind the defense all along. Just saying...

Every good coordinator relies on a good staff and good players

I think BV is no dummy on defense. His passion is infectious.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

His current players must be vaccinated against the passion infection.

Venables Defense with Goodwin on Staff = avg. 17.9 points allowed per game
Venables Defense this year = avg. 30.8 points allowed per game
Goodwin Defense this year = avg. 18.3 points allowed per game

So, clearly Goodwin's assistance resulted in Venables' defenses allowing 30.8 - 18.3 = 12.5 less PPG than it would have otherwise. If Venables was still on Goodwin's staff, Venables' assistance would result in Goodwin's defense allowing only 18.3 - 17.9 = 0.4 less PPG than it is now. This is indisputable evidence as to who is the more valuable defensive mind! :)

I'm sure OU losing all those players to the portal when Riley left for the real USC had nothing to do with it.

Screw Calford.

OU lost 14 players to portal. OU brought in 13!***

BV just took over for a team whose coach got fired. I don't think we can glean anything from this year's results.

I didn't realize Lincoln Riley was fired from Oklahoma. Good for him for finding a fall-back job so quickly!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

oh yeah.... duh, you're right.

Just saying, Coach V is no longer a coordinator and he had twice as much talent at Clemson than Oklahoma does.

I think that is a little premature.

BV may be in over is head at a HC but was absolutely elite as a DC without Goodwin.

Re: Maybe Wes Goodwin was the brains

Oct 10, 2022, 3:38 PM

BV was very hands-on as a DC so I wouldn't go that far but I do think Goodwin was an important cog in the wheel of success.

Now I am in no way disrespecting coach BV and I honestly think given 2 years his OK defense will be nasty. We shall see.

Coach V is the man. Not sure why people keep saying this sort of thing…

Oct 10, 2022, 6:41 PM

Let the man go coach his new team and figure it out.
Same with Tony at UVA.
Those guys did great things for Clemson and were great leaders of their respective units for several years.
New guys are doing fine…but there’s no reason for people to keep throwing shade at the guys who literally helped us win rings.

Anyone who downplays the importance BV was to the growth of Clemson into a college football power is not thinking. There is a reason he wanted Wes but I would have kept BV in a second

If this bunch uses the first 12;games to develop and.sustain a group think I cannot wait for the OSU/CU semi

Oh, how quickly we turn on our own. If BV had taken most

Oct 10, 2022, 7:39 PM

of OUR talent with him to Okie land, you revisionist history buffs would be singing a different tune right now. Riley poached a lot of talent when he jumped ship, and others left. FIFTEEN players transferred almost immediately, including 1st AND 2nd string QBs. They also lost SIX ESPN Top 300 incoming recruits who decommitted. And, over time, there were several other defections. But, you maroons go on believing that Brent Venables did it all with smoke and mirrors while he was here.
