I'm not confident at all that we have any capacity to handle a similar caseload here.
Because we run so many for-profit hospitals, our health system is run on narrow margins. We don't have nearly the beds, equipment, manpower we will need.
So unfortunately, many will be triaged into a corner basement to die of pneumonia. You might think about what that would be like for your parents and grandparents.

It's how we can respond that matters.

In places like China, EVERYONE looks to the government for help. If it doesn't come they die like sheep. In the US we have a long history of relying on ourselves, our families, our neighbors, and our local governments more. A HISTORY of that.
You can watch things like Katrina and Sandy and see how bad things can get when people just sit around and wait for the government to save them. Favorite story out of Katrina was the guy who was just sitting there starving, crapping on the floor, in the superdome, waiting for the government to come in and save everyone. He and about 40 others hatched a plan. They found a school bus, hot wired it, and drove to Houston where they were immediately taken care of, while others languished for days and days in the Superdome.
That kind of spirit and thinking is still far more common in the US than people think. That KIND of thinking helps us survive disasters. Helps us win wars. Helps us overcome things, and it will help us handle this better than the CDC, Trump, and Congress combined.
If/when the time comes, we will take care of ourselves. We will create tests and test instead of waiting on the CDC. We will test who doctors think needs it, not per CDC directives. This is already happening. If/when this gets bad, it will shine a light on who we are, and who Washington ISN'T.

we haven't faced a public health crisis of any substantial scale since 1918.
I don't know. Maybe we will get lucky and will shut it down enough before it spreads throughout the country. We will probably know a lot more by the end of the month.

flu. Flu kills many every year.
The problem with coronavirus (thanks a lot you bat-eating Chinese!) is that we do not yet have natural immunity and there is no vaccine.
So yes, it is scary in some ways. But this is what viruses do. We have to let it runs its course in the population.
I am way more scared of the possible business disruption than I am dying of the virus.

that it has low morbidity in pregnant women and children. They seem to shrug it off for the most part. China claims no children were ever sick in Wuhan meaning they have some natural immunity or that they don't get major symptoms so no one realizes they are sick.

It's not the virus that is going to kill you. It's the waiting for the ICU unit to come open so you can get treatment that is going to kill you. If this thing spreads and we have thousands of people showing up to the ER. The ER is going to get full. The med staff is going to be working and exposed nearly 24hrs/day. As the med staff become exhausted and sick, more delays for treatment to the newly infected will rise. This virus will be a huge threat to anyone who is over 60, has diabetes, has breathing issues, has heart issues. These are the people who are most at risk. If this is not you, then sure no sweat, just a bad case of the cold. However, you will infect and kill your freinds and or family members who might be at risk.

Don't go to Twitter for news about this.......

Really, don't. First, you can't verify anything, and second, if it's true, you'll go to the woods and live in a tent and hunt and fish for food.
But as a general rule the world over, you can assume politicians/leaders will blow small things out of proportion if it helps them gain popularity or power. Likewise, they will lie, deceive, and downplay MAJOR problems that can hurt them. The #### has hit the fan in Iran, Italy, and China though.
I pray our government is making rapid and massive plans to handle what is likely coming our way in 2-3 weeks. I don't really care if Trump downplays everything at first, as long as they're preparing. War powers to retool factories immediately for mask, glove, and gown production and respirators and ventilators, and oxygen, and re-purposing hotels/convention centers/arenas for quarantining mild cases....all needs to be done, yesterday. We need to be fortifying utilities also. Phone, internet, cell towers, water and sewer, trash collection, electricity, handling of medical waste, incinerators, food supply....those things also need to be addressed and must remain functioning. Businesses running all of the above need to be prepared to keep running however possible and have plans in place to keep the water and lights on, and food on the table.
Then hopefully Trump will be right and a genius. If not, we can at least say we were prepared.
But watching what came out of China on Twitter, and now the same coming out of Italy, and the measures that have been taken....I'd take this THREAT VERY SERIOUSLY.

Twitter is just a tool, no more or less valid than any

other word of mouth form of communication. We obviously have to verify information coming from multiple distinct sources in order to form a fact-based consensus on what is actually happening on the ground. It can be difficult to digest the volume of information in order to get an accurate picture of what is happening. Mix in some critical thinking and ask the right questions about how the picture is framed, motivations and incentives for disinformation.
For the last several years, I have begun to trust opinions of people who are on the ground more than the archaic sense-making apparatus that has failed us so often in the past.
Everyone has to carefully vet their sources on Twitter. Do they have a reputation and track record for integrity?
Early information can be the most difficult to track. I doubt this guy Jason Van Schoor has any incentive to mislead his followers on Twitter over something this dead-serious. And his story tracks with multiple other threads on the same topic.
Here's another one with the same general message:

The white house spokesman briefed congress on the Chinese virus in Jan but the congress and media were all tied up trying to remove Trump from office.
Trump declared a national emergence but no one seemed the least bit concerned at the time. That was late January, I think Jan 27th.
It's Trump's baby to rock but I swear, the media and democrats could have at least tried to serve the American public by finding the least bit of honest hidden deep in their souls.
