ahead in the rivalry going back to 1896!

When you consider they started playing football few years before us..school is about 90 years older..has a student body much larger with twice as many fans according to stats..located in the Capitol of state..have had control of the purse strings for ages due to legislators being grads & lawyers..

And, that the Legislature made us play at their house 63 straight years til 1960 when they 1st visited Tigertown..

then being 30 games ahead in a long tense rivalry with the supposed big dog (aka Chicken) is big stuff!

and from 1896 thru 1959 every game was in Columbia

yep coach Howard had a breakeven-ish record against them because of that. He only had them in DV about 5 times in his 29 year tenure

Bill, It is not just playing on the rival's field, though Howard complained about it for years. Carolina got the money from the concessions year after year, Clemson fans always faced the sun. To this day they jack up the price for tickets for the Clemson game to make Clemson fans subsidize their overall ticket prices to get seats in the high upper deck.

But take a look at other states, particularly southern states that have a so-called "flagship" university and also in addition a tech, agricultural or other "state" university. The "University of" always gets the better funding, better political considerations, better press and the like and that is certainly true of the Carolina. But in almost every state those advantages translate also to better success in sports, particularly football. Bama/Auburn, Georgia/Tech, UNC/NC State, U Texas/any other Texas state school, OK/Ok State, Ole Miss/Miss State. In each case the original university has an advantage, if not a sizable advantage in head-to-head football victories. The only other example I can think of that breaks the mold is UVA/Va.Tech, for which Tech has a historical advantage, but UVA did not have all the earlier games at home-but home and home or various other venues in Va.
