And previous years were unusually good and this year is unusually bad to even it out?

Million dollar question. Or do you force Monte into replacing assistants. I do know one thing for certain, we make splash headlines in the spring that Clemson is top 10 recruit class, but I've never seen tnet come back in September and update the real class. Who actually showed up. I look at it and we're top 30... Which is exactly what we're getting. Most years we'll get to a regional, perhaps as in bball, we'll make a super or sweet 16 every 6 or 7 years. Unacceptable.
Now, does one go with a coach that's philosophically different. Like upstate. Strategy is not long ball, it's get on base. Also, roster with juco and transfers.
I also know for a fact SC baseball moms at HS level love Monte because he recruits in state whereas they're not keen on Kingston because he tends to skip over the good instate talent and recruits oos big fish. Also Kingston believes in juco and transfers. Tough questions that only the experts can answer.

Record in close games is generally seen as luck

and is often a stat that is looked at to project improvement / regression in the following season. Teams that win lots of close games generally aren't as good as their record would indicate and vise versa. This pretty much applies for all sports.
If you recall, SC had a really good record in close games in Muschamps first 2 seasons. Many people read too much into their record and thought he was making huge progress. Oops!
On the other side of that, 2016 ND went 4-8 with a 1-7 record in 1 score games. The next year they won 10 games.

I would have to absolutely totally agree. The only way to really tell a trend is to dig deeply into the stats. E.g. how many were walk offs either way, a win or loss. How many came in the 7-8 innings. Were we behind and closed to within one run etc. How were leads blown, errors, freebies, or hits.
Yesterday, and we're not sure if Teo hurt or not. Teo is good bunter and excellent defense. So perfectly legit to question Monte in game decisions. Personally, I don't like an all out analytics approach. Mixture.
Good example - think it's the PC FB coach that says always go with onside kick, or always go on 4th and 4 or less etc... To me, those are in game decisions. Like Brad, do you call timeout with 10 secs remaining or let them play. Coaches descrection.
