Alright friends. Going to get my hands dirty.

Son of’s Land Rover discovery failed emissions test so I’m heading to the garage to get multiple cuts and burns while throwing hundreds of dollars of parts at this truck so that I can get it back on the road and get him out of my truck. It’s pre-OBDII so there are zero codes to steer me in any particular direction. Expect multiple trips to internet, auto parts stores, and harbor freight for supplies tools and parts.
All prayers, vibes, and donations accepted.

You mean the one he's moving to SC with that will soon be registered at your family's address in G-ville, in a state that has no emission requirements? That Discovery?

We're missing a LOT of tax revenue, obviously. The neighborhood up the road that I walk the dog to most days has numerous tags from NC, FLA, Ohio, Michigan, and a few other choice states parked in driveways. Same cars with the same tags that have been parked at those houses for the last 4 years I have had the pup.
On the flip side, it's a GREAT neighborhood for a dog to poop. Regularly.
Also reminds me of my pal over in Greer that used to hang out with us at Clemson. He ran through his SC driver's license, then ran through the NC driver's license (where his mom lived) and then ran through his Indiana driver's license (where his family was from and he grew up) with multiple DUIs on each in the days before computer networks. He finally ended up with a weekends in jail sentence for getting a DUI with no license of any kind. Never really saw him much after that, but I know he's still alive because one of our mutual pals still keeps in touch with him. Word is he was making some serious money selling large trucks that were too unsafe for US hauling and no life left in them to Mexico.

I prefer OBDI normally except when diagnosing emissions issues.
So far I've changed plugs and wires, cleaned the MAF, and cleaned the PCV and the IACV.
Voltage is good from the O2 sensor, so I'm starting to suspect a failed cat...recently heard a little clanging underneath and suspect it is some failed internals on the cc.

Think I've ruled out the cats.
Gonna test the O2 sensors next. This is where OBDII would be cool, to just plug up and see real time voltage values. Oh well, should be fun removing them.

Probably dirt buildup. Try draining the oil and then filling

it back up with bleach. You'll need to clean the fuel line too so dump the entire gas tank in your driveway and then fill that halfway baking soda and then fill the other half up with vinegar. If you get stressed out, take a smoke break before filling it back up with the baking soda and vinegar. Probably wouldn't hurt to dump all the antifreeze and fill that up with peroxide. Better drive it a good 5,000 miles before filling all 3 back up with the regular car liquids.
Also, why isn't your son helping on this? Can he not hold a flashlight steady?
Good luck.

Son's truck needs valve stem seals. We swapped for a few days because it was 'smoking constantly,' which turned out to be smoking upon startup unless it sat for three or more days.
I'm guessing the bit of oil that cause the smoke on startup would leak back down to the crankcase if left long enough. The tail pipe isn't oily, it quits smoking after a few minutes and barely uses any oil.
I reckon I'll get a cheap spring tool at HF and order seals and a gasket at Oreillys and do it in the morning after the parts delivery truck arrives. Probably won't come until it's too late to make the meetup tomorrow.

and stuck the om617 diesel in my project car. Traditionally you needed fuel, oxygen, compression and well timed fire to get an engine to run right. The auto industry has screwed the average person with all these electronics.
I mean, if these cars got 150 miles per gal it might be worth it but this diesel w126 gets 28 mpgs and another five to 7 isn't worth the hassle.
