Listening to Luginbill on ACC PM now.

Sep 6, 2022, 5:55 PM

He's beginning to convince me. There seems to be no doubt in his mind that the offense just doesn't have the spark or aura of confidence (my words, not his) when DJ is in the game.

Here is the way I would characterize what he is saying.

The Clemson offense under Trevor and Deshawn struck fear in the hearts of defenses. "Oh no, here they come. All that talent. We have to cover the whole field." And the offense had the same attitude. "We're gonna take the ball and score. We will see their D and attack it, whatever they throw at us it doesn't matter."

Now, it seems like with DJ at the helm the attitude of the offense seems to be, "Let's see if we can get a couple of first downs."

He described it (admittedly saying it was a small sample size and probably unfair to say it) as when Cade came on the field the sense of excitement, the sense of confidence, the sense of expectation went up noticeably. The whole attitude was different.

I'm not ready to go that far yet. But, I am willing to say that I never saw the attitude of the team coming out onto the field where I thought they were thinking, "We're going down the field and we ain't settling for 3."

I saw that confidence with the D. "Three and out and we go sit down."

I never sensed that with the O.

But, I'm just a fan. I don't know what goes on in practice, in meetings, on the plane or bus traveling to the game, on the sidelines, or - most of all - on the field.

Just a fan, that makes you a TigerNet expert

I'm not questioning what you posted, just agree totally with the last sentence about not knowing all of what happens at practice and meetings etc. is the information that maybe only 1 or 2 posters on the board do have. With the incomplete information that the posters have, I am very suspect that their conclusions are more than an opinion without optimum information.

Why was there a different aura when Klubnik came in the game? Could it be you had a lot of seldom used players getting into the game and they were excited about the chance to perform? I've been the seldom used guy and every time I got in a game it was an adrenaline rush.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you dont have that with your starters, you have a big problem***

Practice is practice. Don't care how great a player is in practice. I just care how they play on game day.
DJ seems to choke when "the lights come on."

Our offense scored 34 points with DJ in the game. I hope he keeps on choking like that.

Re: Just a fan, that makes you a TigerNet expert

Sep 6, 2022, 6:53 PM

14 of the 34 points were gift wrapped by our special teams blocking punts. You can’t count on 2 blocked punts per game. We had to take 4 downs to score a TD from 5 yards out with ALL the momentum of a blocked punt. Without those being set up in the red zone, our offense with DJ scored a whopping 20 points on Ga Tech!!!!

We’ve had every OL, TE, WR, and RB combo on this team in the game with ONE constant since our offense went from Sugar to $hit a year ago. I’ll let you guess what that one constant is.

With no other healthy/viable options last year, and now having a VERY viable option this year, I think fans are just hoping that the coaches are willing to test out Cade with the starters….. just to see what it looks like. History has shown that they will, but they also have never shown this much intense loyalty with their coach speak to a player that is clearly the Achilles heal of what could be a great team.

Trevor nor Deshaun ever had an elite OL.

Our offense scored despite DJ being in the game.
Our talent level on O overshadowed GT D talent by magnitudes.

Luginbill was dead on about DJ as a prospect

Sep 6, 2022, 10:44 PM [ in reply to Re: Listening to Luginbill on ACC PM now. ]

He ranked DJ in the 50s and so many of us here (myself included) blasted him for it.

I humbly admit he was right.

He's a talking head that actually knows what he's talking about.

Luges is one of the smartest and well informed people at that network. Also he and Kanell are basically the only ones who will ever be complimentary towards Clemson.

I heard it also. I didn't hear it myself, but apparently Luginbill was never a believer in DJ from the start. Also, FWIW, based on that small sample size, he picked Syracuse, FSU, and Miami (if I remember correctly) as his top three ACC teams. Personally, rankings and polls talk is dumb so early in the season, but hey, all the talking heads do it anyway.

Luginbill is one of the few analysts that I like, and whose opinion holds any weight with me. In my view, his commentary is no nonsense, objective, direct, and fact-based, except for circumstances in which an opinion is warranted. Even his opinions are based on what he has actually seen with his own eyes. There is no lazy, out-of-left-field commentary coming from him like many others in his field.

Congratulations bretfsu®.

I agree with Luginbill on his characterization of the offensive mindset. Starting with Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins, we were going to put points on you offensively. The question was how many and when would your defense give up. It was certainly evident with the offensive regimes of Watson and Lawrence. Watson’s huddle call against Alabama is evidence: “Let’s go be legendary.”

The FSU offense used to exude that confidence too.

Re: Listening to Luginbill on ACC PM now.

Sep 6, 2022, 7:11 PM

I don't like to post a lot about FSU here. But, you are correct. In he 90s, especially under Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke (but also under Danny Kannell and Thad Busby) the offense had that "aura." They went out on the field expecting to score, not hoping to score, not hoping for a couple of first downs.

And, the defense was very similar to Clemson. They went out and had one goal in mind - 3 and out. Especially after a turnover. I was at a game and saw the offense turn the ball over. The defense literally grabbed their helmets and sprinted onto the field. I talked to a guy several years later and mentioned that to him. (He played TE, later with the Bills.) He told me that was a Mickey trait. Mickey told them the best way to demoralize the offense was to get a three and out after a turnover. They practiced it. They preached it. And, they expected it. Most defenses get a little let down when they have to go back on the field after a turnover. Back in those days, the defense got even more excited than usual.

My beef with the HC at FSU in the LSU game was the first play after the first miffed punt. The first play from scrimmage should have been into the end zone. Bobby Bowden always did that. It usually scored and it reinforced the momentum and made it easier for the defense to come right back out.

I assure you, Nole fans have been questioning Norvell's play calling for 3 years now. Monday was no different.

Norvell has a tendency to go for it on 4th down far more often than most fans would like. The biggest question about his play calling Monday was the pitch out at the goal line, but it wasn't the only one.

I keep coming back to

Sep 6, 2022, 7:06 PM

Would DJ have the se results as Cade, if he'd been in? I don't know but I know he would not have made it look that easy. Nothing looks easy for DJ. I looks like he struggles every play.

Then I ask would Cade have done better if he'd been able to take snaps in the first 3 Quartera? Don't know but my heart and head tell me the offense would have been more potent.

DJ had a decent second half. But nothing about his performance said this guy's got it. He had a decent game. What I'm hoping for is the staff says 4th procession vs Furman is Cade's. 5th go back to DJ. If DJ scores in 5th and/or 6th give him 7. If not Cade on 8th.

Or
Quarters. DJ 1 and 3 Cade 2 and 4.
I was at the GT game when Trevor took the job. KB led offense to nothing. TL scores 4 straight drive. The throw to Renfrow was right in front of me I looked at my daughter and said KB is done. TL is our QB.

I think about what players and coaches ha e said. DJ is our guy he's our leader, we believe in him. What are they going to say. The staff says DJ but what ere they gonna say, nah should be Cade. Of course they're going to say that but let's see it on the field.

Said the same thing to my son when TL threw that pass. I just think Cade has the shills wrong that we need. Everything happens faster. He is a real threat to run and can’t sprint out. That’s a big deal with our line. My questions is do we make the change before we lose a game or afterwards. It will happen in the Wake- NC State-FSU stretch.

I think a lot of the evaluations of DJ today are based on last year

Sep 6, 2022, 8:05 PM

and not last night.

Many people were burned last year when they predicted him to be a Heisman finalist. As we know, he didn’t perform close to that prediction.

Despite DJ’s hard work this offseason and what I think was clearly an improved performance last night, he’s still being criticized (unfairly, I would say).

I’m not sure what would alleviate these criticisms, short of him completing 100% of his passes and throwing for 5+ TDs.

Lost in many of these complaints about him is the fact that his receivers and offensive line continue to be inconsistent and unreliable.

I agree that Klubnik came in and looked great. That was awesome to see! I also recall Willy Korn looking amazing in his first college action too. A wonderful start is no indication of what will come. Although we all believe Cade is going to be great, one possession doesn’t tell us much.

I think it’s fine to still not be sold on DJ. Last year was rough. But being overly critical of DJ, and using one drive by the backup in garbage time against a fairly poor opponent to try to undermine DJ somehow is ridiculous.

Working behind that OL, still a work in progress, I think the biggest thing the coaches could do would be to change the play calling.

1. Don't call so many zone reads.
2. Use DJ in the running game with QB draws and counters. (Streeter and Dabo mentioned this.) He's a plow horse not a thoroughbred. Get him moving vertically.
3. Figure out a way to protect him behind that OL. I'll let the coaches figure out the best way to do this. I'm sure they are working on it as I type. They saw how many times he was pressured. That's why they get the big bucks, to figure that stuff out.

I think playing to DJ's strengths will lead to marked improvement.

But, with that said, I would not question the coaches if they made the switch to Cade this week.

DJ is DJ….and we have a large dataset now to evaluate. Not great. Klubnick, on the other hand is largely unknown to us in terms of the college game.

My guess is the coaches have the same opinion.

We will see.

Sep 6, 2022, 9:28 PM

Chasing DJ were chasing fools gold. He thought he would be a bust in college, That was during the Sunday AM show w/ Sallee about game 3 or 4 last year. I don’t remember the specifics other than noting his criticism at the time was correct, he seems like a great kid, has gotten engaged w/ team mates this year, played incrementally better BUT, seems to not process things fast, has a problem with turf snakes and at 58 years old - I might be able to beat him in a 20 yard run.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its way more than "aura"

Sep 6, 2022, 9:43 PM

Cade can move the pocket and makes up for an inept interior OL, and at the RT position. We need plays designed to get our WRs wide open because they can barely get any separation or catch the ball now in contention.

There are so many problems on offense that make me question why Austin, Spiller, Streeter, and Grisham are there. Is it more important to hire ex-Clemson folk than folk that can provenly produce?

Football is an emotional sport. If the players know their QB sucks or thinks the backup is their best chance at winning their play will reflect that based on who is in the game. Maybe it shouldn't be that way, but it is.
