Landscaping/Grass Questions - Many Questions

Sep 11, 2012, 4:25 PM

About to plant some zoysia before the end of September, like the map online told me to do. I have that part down. Questions are:

1) If I already have a weedy lawn, it seems as if I can just plug it every six inches or so without killing all the weeds and grass first. Is this true?

2) Should I even use plugs? Or should I just sod it? Plugs, even when needing a ton are extremely cheap, but it will take a siht ton to do the lawn and I am not sure if I want to take on this task by myself.

3) Should I just kill the whole darn yard, till, rake all the crap out and just plug the yard? Or is this overkill.

4) Lastly, I have a drainage problem in my yard due to its slant. Online it says not to worry about this because basically Zoysia will take over quickly and will hold in almost any condition. Thoughts?

Thanks for the help!

I grow weeds in my yard.

They grow under all conditions and look just like grass when mowed.

Do you have patience?

If not, sod and be done with it.

If you do, plug the daylights out of it, and wait. Spray the weeds every year, feed the good grass (get a soil sample, etc done) the zoyzia will take over.

I actually work for a sod farm. Our recommendation is to kill everything that is currently there, till and rake up any large debris that is left. Then we always recommend sodding over plugging (not just because we are a sod company
). The reason for this is because this time of year the spreading will be very minimal due to dormancy being right around the corner. Even in prime growing season weeds will fill back in the bare areas faster than the Zoysia will spread.

Hope this helps if you need any further help feel free to tmale me.

Sod is the way to go

I had to re-sod my back yard a few years ago when I removed a deck and put down what looked like dead grass in November (zoysia) - i had one or two bare spots by the end of the next August - looks great now.
