Kirby/ Norvell

Are Kirby and Mike pulling scholarships from kids already in their program to make room for all of these Bama transfers or do they just have the unfilled scholarships ready to go? I know We are sitting around 86 scholarship athletes. I hate to pull a ride from a kid thats stuck with Clemson to give it to a transfer but I also hate to see it raining talent and letting it go to FSU and Georgia.

With another portal window opening up in May I would imagine both coaches will use spring practice to evaluate talent then cut scholarships from players not deemed worthy enough in time for them to potentially go elsewhere.

Although scholarship "culling" happens in the SEC and elsewhere every single

year, there are only four valid reasons for taking a scholarship away per the NCAA. They are:

1) Student-athlete voluntarily quits the team
2) Student-athlete engaging in serious misconduct
3) Student-athlete providing false information
4) Student-athlete suffering from a disabling injury

Now, none of those four says anything about "We are bringing in another kid who we deem to be better than you at the football, and so we are taking your scholarship away and giving it to him instead." That it happens, widespread, is the open dirty secret of college football. And, especially in the SEC, It Just Means More.

I guess my son got caught in number 4. My understanding is Saban, and I assume Kirby, convinced kids they would be better off at a smaller school, UAB for example, and I’m sure convinced them it was the best thing (#1). I imagine Nick had the resources to make sure the kid stayed on scholarship at the smaller school? You are right it is the way SEC teams operate, shady as it may be.

A lot of people don’t realize college scholarships are for 1 year not 4. So it is not really “pulling scholarships,” it’s more they are not offered a subsequent scholarship the next year. So Kirby and Saban only promise a 1 year scholarship. They over-recruit and portal well beyond 85 and fix it by moving/culling guys on each year who are just not cutting it. I read where Saban was a master at this in that he used his influence to get guys he culled in other smaller school programs in Alabama. I’ve read he was a master at encouraging “culled” players into believing how much better off they would be where they could get more playing time. This probably got infinitely harder with kids getting NIL and losing it in the culling to a smaller school process?!

This has been one of Dabo’s big draws with recruits and momma’s. If the kid comes in and keeps his nose clean and keeps his academics in order, Dabo will honor his scholarship annually for 4 years, doesn’t matter if he would never see the field. Dabo probably lives and dies by this to some extent. He gets some recruits he may not otherwise, but gets stuck with some less talented guys who may never contribute too. It means we have very little room to miss on recruits AND development. Kirby and Saban had way more safety net in their system.

Yes it is. Get real. The commitment should be to get a degree

I don’t disagree in concept but it happens all the time. It happened to my son in an Olympic sport. He started his freshman year, got injured to the point his availability for the next year was questionable, so he was not given his athletic scholarship funds the next year.

You can classify it however you like, but the scholarship commitment a recruit signs is for 1 year. It has to be offered and signed again every year.

In the real world, companies prune their bottom performers on a fairly regular basis to make room for up and coming talent that is making a major impact on the bottom line. Hanging on to C players is not the way to become an A company.
