Key to success is defending the slant/crosser off of playaction

Jan 2, 2019, 12:14 PM

They love that play and have had great success with it. If we can shut it down, we win.

It really is their go to play. I know they will have success with other plays and will be able to run the ball better than we would like them to but this play is critical IMO. Hope we have it planned out.

"Not so fast my friend." It won't be that simple. If I were Bama I would get my TEs into the action by slanting them across the middle and down the middle. We have shown inability to stop these plays in the past. I'm concerned about our LBs stepping up too quickly, which is also why the slant could be attractive.

If I had to pick one concept to pin the game on (besides strange/key penalties and turnovers) I'd say it's our ability to pressure Tua into making bad throws (like UGA did). The quick passes do not really present an opportunity to put pressure on, but those are not going to break our back.

Speaking of TEs, seems like we have forgot we have them. I have not explicitly checked stats, but sure does not seem like we target them very much...

for play action and throw the slant. They've killed people with that play all year.

The only thing I've really seen get Tua into trouble this year is holding the ball too long. He also creates big plays sometimes doing it, but he doesn't like to get the ball out quickly often. If you can get pressure on him while he's scanning the field looking for the big play you can get shots on him and force him into some bad plays. The problem is you need coverage to hold up for quite awhile.

We really need to be able to stop the run with a minimal number of guys in the box so Tua doesn't pick us apart, and that's where losing big Dex is really going to hurt us in this game.
