Just Setting the groundwork

For a mostly SEC/Big Ten CFB going forward. Even with 12 teams, except for a couple outliers the bulk will be SEC and Big Ten teams, because of the "eye test" for the "best" teams.

“Clemson is 13-0, but they really struggled at Wake Forest on that Friday night in October, winning only by 17. It’ll be really interesting to see if the committee picks them or Tulane for that twelfth playoff spot. Coming up next we preview the six SEC teams and five Big 10 teams who are locks for the CFP!”

On point. That is why the SEC and BIG 10 have been pounding the expansion drum for years. More money and exposure for both of them. The other conferences and teams continue to gradually slip into also rans.

This will happen and stay in place until ESPN’s CFP ratings (and maybe also CFB’s overall season ratings) first level out and then start to decline slightly.

At that point, Disney will commission a marketing study in which, to Disney’s surprise, reveals that too many CFB fans of teams that are not in the SEC ot B1G have largely limited their viewing of games to those of their favorite non-SEC / non-B1G team.

Only THEN will Disney realize that one of two ‘golden geese’ of TV sports is losing its feathers; their remedy will be to change the CFP team selection rules as a contrivance to add more non-SEC and more non-B1G teams to the CFP party.

Whether that move will come too late for Disney (I.e., too many fans will have found other more fulfilling forms of ‘life diversion’ entertainment, who knows?

Disney has lost its forward looking views with respect to their entertainment business; instead they go with pouring money into ‘safe’ short term projects instead of creative longer term / brand building projects that have the potential to further grow their business. In other words, Disney’s management’s attitude is typical of the giant American corporation; low risk financially driven management decisions as opposed to higher risk decisions that have the chance to grow their business.

By the time that Disney has figured out that their ESPN unit has alienated too many fans, their moves to fix it will be too late for a quick turnaround in their CFB business.
