Dave Doeren talks grant of rights, ACC divisions

Jul 20, 2022, 2:13 PM

NC State coach Dave Doeren just had his media breakout session and offered a few interesting remarks early:

He was asked if he was worried about the state of the ACC and teams leaving.

"With our grant of rights, it’s kinda hard to be worried…We’ve got 14 teams that can’t go anywhere. A $120 million escape fee,” Doeren said.

“I’m watching just like you guys, but with our grant of rights, I think we’re in a strong position in regards to not worrying about anyone leaving.”

He also offered that he was confident in Jim Phillips' leadership at ACC commish.

Doeren also was unequivocal about wishing the ACC's divisions were scrapped already this season, as is planned starting next year.

“Let’s put the best two teams on the field and figure it out.”

Dabo Swinney and Clemson players go on the stage here at 3:15 and they are due to meet with the media in a breakout session shortly after that.

Had that $120m figure been put out there publicly

prior to this? This is the first I've heard a real figure put on it.

TBH 120m is about half of what I was expecting and actually seems manageable. If we could negotiate a $120m buyout to leave the ACC, we would make up that lost money in about 2 years. Right??

It has to be more than that or teams would leave

Jul 20, 2022, 2:29 PM

Financed over 30 years that's a drop in the bucket compared to the delta between ACC and SEC payout.

I believe that's in addition to the GoR.

I think that's just the buyout amount. The GOR would be on

couple of guys speculating on a podcast. $120M seems way too low considering there are 16? years left on the deal.

I believe the $120mil is in addition to the media rights belonging to the ACC until 2036. Wish they'd release the current agreement so we'd know for sure.

A “departing team” would receive no money from their new conference. The ACC retains the media rights, so the SEC, BIG, or whoever, would send the ACC Clemson’s portion.
It really is a horrible contract for any team that desires to leave in the next decade and a half. An arbitrated settlement would likely be the best course of action to avoid that massive hit.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Did Dave use a functioning laptop to arrive at that figure?

No comments about laptops on the sideline?***

Interesting choice of words... to "ESCAPE". -- We are prisoners of the ACC -- no one is in the conference of their own volition...
